Don’t bin it, bring it | Meaningful ways to get rid of your old stuff

Contact bans and exit restrictions have changed daily life for all of us. All of a sudden our apartments are too small, our boredom too big and we feel trapped by spending all day at home. For many of us, cleaning up and clearing out is the order of the day.

Outside of our own bubble, there are also countless people who struggle with the problem of not only living in a very small space with the whole family, but also doing their daily work or school lessons from home. Whereas for many of us the laptop or smartphone for daily video calls with colleagues or teachers is taken for granted, the residents of social institutions such as refugee shelters, residential groups, etc., usually lack digital infrastructure but also simple items just like games for leisure activities or simple kitchen materials for cooking.

Therefore, the following organisations are in need of our support.

NEEDED: 20 SMARTPHONES

STÜTZRAD GGMBH

The project Family Guides, which was initiated by Stützrad gGmbH,  offers refugee families individual counselling by 35 volunteers.

These 35 “Family Guides” are people who have been seeking refuge themselves and are therefore able to perfectly understand the challenges of arriving in a new culture. Furthermore, they share experiences that have already been personally experienced.

Personal visits by the Family Guides are now prevented by the measures of the coronavirus. Hence, the organisation is now looking for 20 smartphones to make telephon counseling possible without having to publish private mobile phone numbers.

If you happen to fill up your extra time at home with clearing out and get hold of your old smartphone: Don’t put it back, but contact us! Please contact Anja Rosswinkel via Mail: rosswinkel@stuetzrad.net

NEEDED: POTTING SOIL AND FLOWERS, PLANTS & SEEDS

EJF GEMEINSCHAFTSUNTERKUNFT FÜR GEFLÜCHTETE IN KAROW

The EJF refugee shelter in Karow has been providing a new home for up to 256 residents since December 2016.

Under normal conditions, visits from friends and family outside the shelter are part of everyday life. However, due to the Corona pandemic, external visitors are no longer allowed. That’s why the the coordinator of the accommodation would like to use the circumstances to awaken the garden from hibernation together with the residents.

In order to bring the garden to life, the accommodation needs donations in the form of potting soil and flowers/plants/seeds. You want to donate? With our in-kind donation tool you can easily get in touch with the accommodation.

NEEDED: LAPTOPS, TABLETS & PRINTERS FOR HOME SCHOOLING

GEMEINSCHAFTSUNTERKUNFT FÜR GEFLÜCHTETE MARZAHN

The refugee shelter in Marzahn was opened in 2017 and offers a home to 450 refugees.

Currently, about 125 under 18-year-olds live here on site, most of them go to kindergarten or school every day. For the new situation of learning from home, the kids lack the digital infrastructure to do their homework and to cope with the school material.

To equip the children properly for home schooling, laptops, tablets and printers are needed. If you have a matching offer for this donation request, you can easily get in touch with the NPO via the link!

NEEDED: KITCHEN MATERIALS FOR A SHARED FLAT IN A YOUTH WELFARE INSTITUTION

LAUGHING HEARTS E.V.

Laughing Hearts e.V. currently supports 22 youth welfare institutions in Berlin. They reach 2300 children and young people with the aim to offer them all the same possibilities and chances and to pave the way for a successful future for them, as well as for other children in our society.

Laughing Hearts e.V. has now received an inquiry from its youth welfare institution for the re-equipment of kitchen materials for a shared flat. The 5 young residents between the ages of 16 and 18 are currently cooking a lot. Therefore, the utensils will wear out over time.

Do you have pots and pans, cutting knives and boards, cereal bowls, cooking spoons or a pick hammer? Click on the link to find out how to donate!

NEEDED: COTTON FABRIC REMNANTS

CASABLANCA GGMBH

casablanca gGmbH is a recognized provider of youth welfare services and stands up for children, young people and families in difficult life situations.

Now the gGmbH is looking for cotton fabric remnants that can be washed at 90° degrees to sew makeshift masks. The colour of the fabric remnants is not important. These are distributed to the colleagues and attended families.

Do you have matching cotton fabric remnants for a makeshift mask?

NEEDED: TECHNOLOGY DONATIONS FOR FAMILIES IN REFUGEE SHELTERS

GEMEINSCHAFTSUNTERKUNFT FÜR GEFLÜCHTETE RENNBAHNSTRASSE

In the refugee shelter Rennbahnstraße in Pankow, Berlin, the residents find a place to live and receive support when arriving in Germany.

For the families in the refugee accommodations in Treskowstraße 15-16 and Rennbahnstraße 87 in Pankow-Weißensee, there is currently an urgent need for laptops and tablets, mice, printers and Wlan surf sticks with Internet capability.

Do you happen to have something suitable at home? If so, you can find out here how you can make a donation to the accommodation.

NEEDED: WINDOW SILL FLOWER BOXES

MITHILFE GMBH – GEMEINSCHAFTSUNTERKUNFT HAGENOWER RING

The mitHilfe GmbH offers advice, guidance and support for people who are threatened by homelessness or have already lost their home. Since 2017, the GmbH has been operating a shared accommodation for refugees in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg-Hohenschönhausen.

The 300 residents currently spend a lot of time at home and would like to decorate the windowsills of the accommodation with brown flower boxes. If you can donate one or more flower boxes, the residents would be very happy.

NEEDED: LAPTOPS FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN A SHARED ACCOMMODATION FOR REFUGEES

GU SVERSTORPSTRASSE – EVANGELISCHES JUGEND- UND FÜRSORGEWERK (EJF)

The shared accomodation in the Siverstorpstraße run by EJFs was opened in December 2016 and can accommodate 256 residents. The aim of all the services offered in the shared accommodation is to support the creation of new life perspectives by promoting participation and self-determination of the residents and by creating a network in the surrounding area.

Due to the corona pandemic, the educational system has shifted to the digital world, which unfortunately causes even more difficulties for the already disadvantaged families. In order to enable them to participate in the educational activities and  leisure time activities that take place via the Internet, they need laptops above all.

If you still have a used and well-maintained laptop at home, you can find more information on how to donate it here.

NEEDED: DISCARDED CLOTHES

YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT

The OTTO Group has come up with a very special idea with its ‘Platz schaffen mit Herz’ campaign, which shows how we can all make a great contribution to a charitable project with our donation in kind.

Here’s how it works: You pack a package with your discarded clothes and drop it off at a Hermes Parcel Service. From there it is delivered to a sorting company in Germany, where the donation is purchased, processed and evaluated. The value of your clothes is then donated to a charitable project of your choice, for which you can vote online.

NEEDED: HYGIENE ARTICLES FOR THE REFUGEE SHELTER OHLAUER STRASSE

JOHANNITER-UNFALL-HILFE E.V., REGIONALVERBAND BERLIN

In the “Kiezmahlzeit” of the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. in the former Gerhart-Hauptmann-School in Berlin-Kreuzberg homeless people get a warm meal and something to drink every evening and have the possibility to take a shower and wash themselves. In order to do this, the Kiezmahlzeit is constantly dependent on donations of hygiene products such as shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes and shampoo.

You want to make an in-kind donation here? The Kiezmahlzeit is very happy about every donation which you can drop off at the shelter every day between 17 and 21 o’clock.
