How to volunteer in your city this Corona-winter

Unfortunately, the Corona pandemic will continue to force us to keep a distance for the next few weeks, and even over the holidays the easing of contact restrictions is anything but certain. In addition, the cold and wet weather is taking away our last motivation to set foot outside.

Of course, this also limits the possibilities for commitment or volunteering. But, and this is very important for us to say, there are still organisations and projects that have rethought their plans for the Corona winter or continue to run on a regular basis and are especially happy about your support.

That’s why we’ve listed a few projects for you and a few winter volunteering moments:

1 I BECOME A “LESEHELD*IN” FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, HAMBURG, STUTTGART AND MUNICH

The non-profit organisation KinderHelden is looking for voluntary mentors who want to support Hamburg primary school children with difficult starting conditions. Through the project “LeseTandem+” the children receive reading and leisure time mentors who accompany them for one year and specifically promote their reading skills. And because reading aloud also works well at a distance, KinderHelden continues to look for “Leseheld*innen” (means reading heros) in various cities.

2 I TEACH DIGITAL SKILLS TO REFUGEES AND MIGRANT WOMEN

BERLIN

The ReDI School of Digital Integration is a non-profit digital school for newcomers in Berlin. In their courses, they teach women with a migration background of all ages and young refugees aged 17-29 the basics of operating a computer, MS Office, emails and Google Tools. If you like to pass on computer tips and want to be part of a colourful international network, this is the place for you!

3 I BECOME A SOCIAL VISIONARY AND HELP IMPROVE THE CLIMATE IN SCHOOLS

HAMBURG, MUNICH, NUREMBERG, BERLIN, DARMSTADT, WIESBADEN, COLOGNE

The non-profit association Zeichen gegen Mobbing e. V. works on improving tomorrow’s living together. Therefore they support affected persons, schools and parents in dealing with mobbing with preventive anti-mobbing workshops. As a social visionary, you will be optimally trained with online courses to prepare and implement workshops at schools later on.

4 I LEARN GERMAN ONLINE WITH REFUGEES

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING | COLOGNE

Due to the current spread of Corona and limited social contact, many language students and learners of German lack the exchange with native speakers. To counteract this, the Malteser-Integrationsdienst Cologne arranges individual online German tandems. You speak German very well and can spare one hour a week for a virtual meeting for German learners? Then let’s get started!

5 I BECOME AN ADVENTURER FOR FATHERS AND CHILDREN

DarMSTADT, FRANKFURT AM MAIN, WiesBADEN

With the project ‘PapaZeit – gemeinsam mit Papa in die Natur’, AbenteuerWelt creates an awareness for sustainable development and an playful adventure in the forest for children between 3-6 years and their fathers. You can support the project by helping, supervising and guiding participants at activities.

6 I SUPPORT THE SCHWÄBISCHE TAFEL AS A SHOP HELPER

STUTTGART AND FELLBACH

The Schwäbische Tafel Stuttgart e.V. continues to campaign against a throwaway society even in Corona times and at the same time tries to improve the living situation of people in need in the food sector. For this purpose, they are looking for volunteers to help with loading and unloading the vehicles, sorting the food and/or handing them out in the shop.

Sounds good, but unfortunately you don’t live near Stuttgart? Then take a look at Tafel Deutschland, where you can use the Tafel Finder to find a food bank in your area that appreciates your support.

7 I START A MENTORSHIP FOR SINGLE MOTHERS AND FAMILIES

MUNICH

Especially in difficult times, single parents and families need additional support in everyday life or someone to take care of a good balance. For the group accommodation in Laim, the Innere Mission Munich is therefore looking for volunteers who can take on an individual sponsorship. If you have time and would like to support them as a volunteer mentor, please contact them.

8 I KNIT OR CROCHET SCARVES, HATS OR SOCKS FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT A HOME

REMOTE VOLUNTEERING

Winter is just around the corner. For many homeless people, warm clothing is especially important at this time of year. We at vostel.de are therefore looking for volunteers who knit or crochet scarves, socks and hats to support homeless people with a warm piece of clothing. We work together with several homeless shelters and institutions and make sure that the knitted scarves arrive where they are needed. So, get your knitting/crocheting needles – Ready? – Go!
