Volunteering in Hamburg | 5 projects you can support right now

You want to give something back to your city of Hamburg and volunteer? We know it’s sometimes not so easy to find a suitable volunteering activity. That’s why we’ve put together a small but fine selection of social projects that are looking forward to your support.

You don’t see a project you’d like to get involved in? Then you will find many other projects on in which you can get involved as a volunteer in Hamburg. Just take a look.

Your team wishes you lots of fun volunteering!

1 I Become a reading hero for Hamburg primary school children

The non-profit organisation KinderHelden arranges reading and leisure time mentors who accompany a child for a year and specifically promote their reading skills. The aim is to teach the children the skills of reading as well as to increase their self-esteem.

Would you like to become a reading mentor? Then get in touch with the team now!

2 I Become a trainer of cycling courses for women with a refugee background

Bike Bridge organises regular bicycle training sessions for women who have a refugee and/or migration background. On the one hand, cycling should enable the participants to achieve a higher degree of mobility and, on the other hand, create an encounter between refugee women and the local population.

As a trainer, you will prepare a training session together with 8-9 other trainers (with the help of a training manual) and help the participants learn how to cycle. Does this sound like something you would enjoy? Then get in touch with the team now!

3 I Support young people in a application marathon for apprenticeships

The MUT ACADEMY is organising an application marathon in Hamburg on 4 and 11 December 2021. Here, 30 young people from the 10th grade of Hamburg’s district schools will send out as many applications for apprenticeships as they can in one day.

As a volunteer, you will help them on this day with things like researching apprenticeships, making phone calls, designing application documents and sending them by email. If you are free on one of these days from 9-15, then register now for one of the dates. The students look forward to your support!

4 I Campaign for a climate-neutral Germany

GermanZero is committed to a climate-neutral Germany and is developing a concrete draft law for this purpose, which is intended to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement – contrary to the measures of the German government, which have so far achieved little.

This bill is to be submitted to the Bundestag and Bundesrat for a vote. In order to achieve the necessary 2/3 majority in the Bundesrat, a demanding and active civil society is needed – and you can be part of it.

As part of the local group Hamburg, you enter into a dialogue with your constituency MPs and present GermanZero and our draft law. The organisation will support you in founding such a group and in preparing the talks with the MPs.

5 I Get involved in one of the Oxfam shops in Hamburg

In the Oxfam shops, volunteer teams sell donated items for a good cause and are thus committed to a just world without poverty. The profits benefit Oxfam’s development work.

Together with your team colleagues, as a volunteer you will ensure that the shop runs smoothly: accepting donations, sorting them, presenting them in the shop and advising customers. In addition, you can take part in campaign days and pass on Oxfam’s values and visions to customers. You will work one fixed shift per week (5 hours). You can become active in one of the following shops in Hamburg: Ottensen | Hoheluft | Wandsbek

Still haven’t found the right project for which you would like to volunteer in Hamburg? Then you will find many more opportunities for volunteering on and certainly the right project for you.

I’m a PhD student here, and I want to work as a volunteer. Unfortunately, I can’t speak German. My English, Persian, and Turkish language skills are super.

Hi there Masoud, happy to hear that you are looking for volunteering opportunities! There are a number of projects you can support without any German skills. Simply have a look here at this link to see all projects you can currently support in Hamburg. You will find a filter option named “German skills” there, where you can filter for projects that you can support with little/no German skills.

I hope this helps. Have a joyful volunteering!
