Then you&#8217;re not alone. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/de.statista.com\/infografik\/13203\/anzahl-alt-handys-in-deutschen-haushalten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statista<\/a>, there are over <strong>200 million unused phones<\/strong> just in Germany. But why is that a problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They all contain rare earth elements. These are not as rare as the name suggests, but their production is incredibly <strong>harmful to the environment<\/strong>. Extracting rare earths from old devices instead is an important way to reduce environmental and humanitarian damage and reuse valuable materials. Industry relies heavily on them, and demand is rising steadily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, only<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ardalpha.de\/wissen\/umwelt\/nachhaltigkeit\/seltene-erden-energiewende-metalle-smartphones-china-100.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 43% of the german electronic waste<\/a> &#8211; including phones, tablets and laptops &#8211; is properly disposed. This means that valuable resources cannot be recycled in a reasonable way, which &#8211; small fun fact &#8211; also violates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elektrogesetz.de\/themen\/das-neue-elektrogesetz-elektrog3-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electronic Equipment Act<\/a>, by the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting lack of rare earths must therefore be extracted using acids, fluorides, heavy metals, thorium and uranium, often under poor working conditions. The resulting waste materials are also highly polluting. AfB | Recycling with social added value<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe&#8217;s largest non-profit IT company offers you the opportunity to return up to three small devices with a maximum size of 25cm (smartphones &amp; tablets) using a free shipping label or directly return them to an AfB store (go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afbshop.de\/Filialfinder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">store search<\/a>). Devices over 25cm in size (most laptops) can also be returned free of charge when purchased new. If you send them in without buying a new device, transport and disposal costs may be charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The special thing about the AfB is that people with and without disabilities work together to refurbish and resell used devices. This does not only save valuable resources but also creates great social added value. Devices that are no longer usable are professionally recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afbshop.de\/Elektro-Altgeraete-Ruecknahme-und-Entsorgung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AfB shipping label<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. NABU | Recycling to support the protection of insects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Telef\u00f3nica Deutschland, NABU offers you the opportunity to order a <strong>free collection box<\/strong> with which you can collect and send in as many cell phones and tablets as you like. This way, you cannot only bring your own devices back into the cycle, but also collect old devices from friends, family and colleagues. Simply set up the box and wait until it is full. At the same time, you can also send in <strong>individual devices <\/strong>via a <strong>free shipping label<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, Telef\u00f3nica donates a fixed sum to NABU for the collected phones, which flows into the <strong>NABU insect protection fund<\/strong>. Pro Wildlife | Recycling to support animal welfare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also order a free collection box including an information flyer from the phone collection campaign run by Pro Wildlife and Deutsche Telekom &#8211; but only smartphones without built-in batteries can be sent in this box. Alternatively, you can use your<strong> own box<\/strong> for collection or <strong>send in individual devices yourself<\/strong>. These will be refurbished and distributed to children and young people who have had limited opportunities to participate in homeschooling. Just contact the team with some information about your old device and they will get back to you with more details as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative already exists in almost 40 cities. Otherwise a short-circuit could cause a fire. Damaged lithium batteries or those recalled by the manufacturer can also not be recycled!
