Yet for some, forming meaningful connections can still be difficult when everything around <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">simply seems &#8230; so foreign<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Volunteering is an obvious choice for many to meet new people and do something good (and <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vostel.de\/en\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">vostel.de<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> is of course a great platform for this). <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">My experiences, however, have brought me much more &#8211; and t<\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">his is exactly what I want to share with you today.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1361\" style=\"width: 623px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1361\" src=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/P5280962-min-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Simone Wong\" width=\"623\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/P5280962-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/P5280962-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/P5280962-min-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/P5280962-min-816x544.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Simone Wong)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Breaking your bubble<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Life is full of diversity, and Berlin is the perfect example. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The city attracts people from all kinds of cultures and backgrounds; you\u2019ll never fail to hear at least three or four languages when walking down a single street in Mitte. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Diversity in this city, sadly, can come with conflict or biases between social groups. Most times it can be as subtle as giving an impolite glance on the U-Bahn, or avoiding a street you heard might be \u2018sketchy\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esrc.ac.uk\/about-us\/50-years-of-esrc\/50-achievements\/social-identity-us-and-them\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In society we naturally form groups of \u2018us\u2019 and \u2018others\u2019 as a shortcut to position ourselves. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sad truth is, people are often afraid of unfamiliar \u2018outgroups\u2019, hence the illusion that it\u2019s hard to interact with those that are different from us. In worse cases, this can lead to hostile attitudes or prejudice towards those that we don\u2019t associate with. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">What I think is a good way to tackle this? <\/span><\/span><\/span><b><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Improving your sense of empathy through volunteering.<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Empathy is our ability to understand other\u2019s mental states, emotions and feelings. I think many people often think of volunteering as an act of contribution or \u2018giving back\u2019 to the community. It almost seems like there\u2019s a pre-assumed power dynamic, that the only reason why we\u2019re here is because someone is in need of time or resources. Yet is it simply just a concept of give &amp; take? Since then I&#8217;ve lost count on how many social issues I&#8217;ve come across: from mental illness, LGBTQ +, poverty, food waste &#8230; to AIDS, animal rights, recycling, ethical consumerism &#8230; &nbsp;the more activities I participate in, the more I\u2019m exposed to new ways of thinking that could never be sparked on my own &#8211; and i<\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">t simply makes sense for me now to continue the journey in Berlin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an <a href=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/en\/2016\/02\/16\/4-reasons-all-expats-should-volunteer-in-berlin-plus-advice-on-how-to-do-it\/\">expat<\/a>, volunteering also helped me reconnect with my hometown. Hong Kong is one of the richest cities in the world, <em>yet the wealthiest 10% of households earn nearly <\/em><\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-hongkong-anniversary-wealth-gap-idUSKBN19I1E2\"><b>44 times<\/b> <\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>more than the poorest 10%<\/em>. This absurd income disparity has only fostered our ignorance towards ways of living and the needs of other social groups. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This problem, of course, isn\u2019t limited to Hong Kong. It&#8217;s true that even without first-hand experiences, we can still discuss social welfare, or list out policies or issues we think should be prioritised. Yet how much would this list of yours truly benefit the community? Or would it be based on a narrower view of what you think is <em>\u2018good for everyone\u2019?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>&#8220;For me, volunteering is never about the gratification you get afterwards for doing something \u2018right\u2019; instead, it\u2019s having a deeper understanding and reflection of <\/b><b>why<\/b><b> you think certain things \u2018<\/b><b>aren\u2019t right<\/b><b>\u2019.&#8221;<\/b><\/h4>\n<hr>\n<p>I would love to know what volunteering has brought to you &#8211; it would be great to hear your stories and thoughts!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In my next article, I&#8217;d like to share my comparison of volunteering in different countries in terms of practices, attitudes and more (which my opinion is of course, only based on my own experiences ?).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Thanks for reading!
