In today\u2019s post I\u2019d love to quickly share with you several differences I\u2019ve noticed during my time volunteering in 3 very different places: Hong Kong, UK, Denmark.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Volunteering in Hong Kong<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12052 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Hong-Kong.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Hong-Kong.jpg 600w, https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Hong-Kong-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\nHong Kong (Source: Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hong Kong may be known as a dynamic and cosmopolitan city &#8211; yet a lot of its social issues are often overlooked. People work hard and over office hours. Whilst it\u2019s crowned the world\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/economy\/article\/2096456\/hong-kong-crowned-worlds-most-competitive-economy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most competitive economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it also means a lot of stress is built from work dissatisfaction and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrinasia.com\/employee-retention\/work-life-balance-in-hong-kong-the-perennial-concerns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor work-life balance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Problems such as social stratification is further worsened by consumer culture and a huge focus on the city\u2019s economic growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned in the previous post that volunteering has helped me <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/en\/volunteering-is-empathy-in-motion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reconnect with my hometown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; it allows me to gain a well-rounded insight to lives of communities and social groups that I missed a chance to interact with during my time abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, people\u2019s willingness and opinions on volunteering can tell you a lot about the city. In such a fast-paced environment like Hong Kong, I find people\u2019s attitudes towards the topic to be quite polarised. I know many see it as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018a waste of time\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (when they rather be resting during their free time: why the extra work?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some also see volunteering as an active reminder that not everything in life is about monetary reward! <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, you\u2019re missing the point if you only expect immediate and visible outcome from volunteering.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of my most memorable experiences: working with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hongkong.asiaxpat.com\/directory\/health-medical\/counselling\/ef034925-39ed-4d1e-a733-b56480bbddb3\/teen-aids\/\">TeenAIDS<\/a> as an event runner and &#8216;educator&#8217; on HIV preventions and &#8216;mythbusting&#8217; &#8211; on a huge cruise ship that sails around the world and dock in multiple cities!\u00a0\u26f5\u00a0And looking back, I&#8217;m really glad to have worked with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairtradehk.org\/en\/\">Fair Trade Foundation<\/a> in their exhibitions and stores. Without stepping outside of my comfort zone, at the age of 14 I would have never been aware of issues like third world exploitation otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Volunteering in UK<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12055 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/UK.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/UK.jpg 600w, https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/UK-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\nDurham, UK (Source: www.thisisdurham.com)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also had a few experiences during my stay in the UK. As a student, I made use of university fairs that connect students with societies and non-profit organisations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a population of 50,000, the cozy university town I lived in was way smaller than Berlin or Munich &#8211; this means with local and small-scale organisations, you probably won\u2019t find yourself participating in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> influential (or societally impactful) activities. <\/span><b>However, this also taught me that there\u2019s no need to actively consider if an event is<\/b><b><i> \u2018worthwhile\u2019<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In my case, I\u2019ve really enjoyed simple activities like pet-walking, and taking care of children at the local cr\u00e8che, because <\/span><b>they help to bridge the missing, and much needed interaction between university students and local residents.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also found <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/volunteermakers.org\/rise-micro-volunteering-british-volunteer-revolution-claire-sully\/\"><b>micro volunteering<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be a popular choice for busy students &#8211; for example contributing to projects that look for real-life data, donating, or simply spreading the word online for charities you support. <\/span><b>At the end of the day, there\u2019s always a way to do something good that will suit your lifestyle. <\/b><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Volunteering in Denmark<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12057 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Denmark.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Denmark.jpg 600w, https:\/\/vostel.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Denmark-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\nCopenahgen, Denmark (Source: Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denmark has always been known as the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happiest country in the world<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. My time in <\/span><b>Copenhagen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has definitely lived up to this bold claim &#8211; this is thanks to its great welfare system, and work-life balance being an important part of Danish culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, I was surprised by how many events and non-profit organisations I volunteered in were municipally supported: this included a career fair for international (non-Danish speaking) students to connect with European start-ups, a creative Christmas market where visitors can make DIY presents using recycled and waste materials\u2026. with the government\u2019s support, there\u2019s also more resources for organisations to attract helpers (such as freebies, covering their expenses). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was grateful to be part of so many innovative and meaningful events that <\/span><b>encourage social integration, sparks conversation on new ideas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and are often family friendly. Online platforms (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cphvolunteers.kk.dk\/en\/indhold\/cph-volunteers-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CPHVolunteers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that is owned and subsidised by Copenhagen Kommune!) also made it extremely easy for expats to be an active part of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During my time in Denmark I was also remotely working as social media coordinator for a global event to advocate mental wellness. With a small team of &lt;10 people and countless video call meetings across 5 months, we managed to host parades in <a href=\"http:\/\/bubbleparade.org\/\"><strong>over 75 cities<\/strong><\/a> as a celebration of happiness and social inclusiveness\u00a0?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Final Wrap-up\u2026.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is it like to volunteer in where you live?
