According to the BMI, more than 29 million people regularly volunteer in Germany<\/a>. The topics and target groups are as diverse as our society itself, which doesn’t always make it easy for inexperienced people to get started. For this reason, we want to give you a little insight here and show you 7 ideas for social engagement or volunteering. We’ll explain what’s behind each commitment and which groups and topics you can support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For each of the areas presented, you will find many specific projects in which you can become active on our platform vostel.de. We hope you find the right commitment for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Get involved in poverty reduction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Many people in our society are dependent on support because they are affected by poverty. In addition to people with very low or no income<\/strong>, this also includes people who live on the streets as homeless people<\/strong> due to job loss, personal misfortune or other very individual reasons. You can support these people by volunteering in social department stores, at food banks or by volunteering with homeless aid organisations.     In addition to direct help for people affected by poverty, you can also get involved with organisations such as \u2018Aktion gegen Hunger\u2019 or Oxfam to fight poverty in our society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Get involved in Nature & Environmental Protection<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Preserving nature and the environment in the coming years and decades will be a mammoth task. And yet everyone can make a small contribution. The possibilities for volunteering in this area are incredibly diverse. They range from active gardening in participatory gardens<\/strong> or parks to organisational support for climate projects<\/strong> and ecological education projects<\/strong> at schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you care about your environment, maybe even have a green thumb and want to do your part for a green and living environment, getting involved in nature conservation and environmental protection could be just the thing for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. Get involved in Education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Education is an essential building block of a functioning democratic society. But unfortunately, educational opportunities are very unequally distributed. By getting involved in education, you can change this and support one or more people on their way. The target group you work for can be just as diverse as the type of commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How about a reading mentorship<\/strong> for primary school children? Or rather tutoring for pupils<\/strong> in higher grades? What about supporting people who are currently looking for an apprenticeship<\/strong>? Or a language tandem<\/strong> with newcomers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Get involved against the far right & for democracy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Our democracy is particularly susceptible to right-wing and anti-democratic ideas in times of crisis. We have seen this recently with the success of the AfD. At the same time, awareness of the dangers of current developments is growing and new alliances and demonstrations are constantly forming against the rise of populists and extremists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And you too can get actively involved against the far right and for our democracy. In our article, we show you 6 possible ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5. Get involved in Sponsorships<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Sponsorships are not entirely dissimilar to volunteering activities in the field of education. Often, sponsorship is about learning together and supporting a mentee on their educational journey. But sponsorships can also go beyond that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How about, for example, sponsoring an elderly person in a senior citizens’ home, where you keep them company and talk to them? Or a sponsorship with newcomers who you support with everyday things to make their arrival in a new city as pleasant as possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6. Get involved in Upcycling & Zero Waste projects<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    The unnecessary discarding of items and food that are actually still perfectly good is an enormous problem. Mountains of rubbish are becoming bigger and bigger, and the constant production of something new is wasting incredible amounts of resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are now a lot of organisations working in food saving, repair used items or generally raise awareness of Zero Waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    7. Support Organisations with Donations in Kind<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Hand on heart: how many things do you have lying around at home that you don’t really need anymore? Whether it’s clothes, old books, games or tech gadgets – you can give many things that you have almost forgotten a new life. And at the same time, you can make social organisations and other people happy. However, it is important that you always find out beforehand which donations in kind are really needed.
