The Volkssolidaritat is one of the biggest social and welfar organisations in the federal republic and it is the largest in East Germany. In Landesverband Berlin, more than 2500 people are actively volunteering. This includes around 250 locals, interests and self-help groups, that in the membership organisations are angaged in mutual aid, involeved in the social-politic advocacy and in the organization of events. In addition, volunteers are active in projects, activities and subsidiaries, such as daycare centres, meeting places and also in the administration. Since the number of active members and also the number of volunteers is decreased during the last years due to the age structures, the Volkssolidaritat needs to strenghten volunteering. About volunteering engagement the civil society is engaged and provides added value especially for socially disvantaged people. The Volkssolidaritat consists in keeping the motto „Miteinander-Füreinander“ (toghether-each-other), for a more solidary society.More about the organisation
At Meet 'n' Eat mixed teams of refugees and locals cook together meals of their home countries for around 60-80 people. When cooking with a limited amount of place, time and kitchen utensils, we practice intercultural communication (regardless of language barriers) and peaceful conflict management. It is important to us to build mixed teams to support communication between refugees from different countries and locals and to foster intercultural working and learning. The work begins before the main event. The first step is the planning of the meal and the therefor necessary ingredients, the amount and the budget. This is where refugees who bring in their own recipes and kitchen experiences, work closely together with the volunteers who support the planning and help with doing grocery shopping. Since the rooms are usually used by others, we have to put up everything for the Meet n Eat Event and put it away afterwards. Everybody pitches in, decorates the rooms with baloons and flowers, washes up the crockery and cleans the kitchen/event room. When there are some people cooking in the kitchen, visitors, refugees and neighbors sit in the entrance hall or the backyard and play, listen to music, dance, talk and practice German. In the quiet next room different workshops are offered (i.e. for searching for accommodation or jobs) and there are also creative offers (i.e. painting, crocheting, face painting). There can also be held presentations about different topics (i.e. history, culture, consultation offers, religion) in order to create a space for open discussions and exchanges of ideas. Once a month there is also a big Give-away-for-free flew market.
We are looking for volunteers to help out in three shifts for the following tasks:
• Weekly grocery shopping (1 – 4 x per month, ca. 2 – 4 h)
• Kitchen helper (1 – 4 x per month, ca. 1 – 4 h)
• Setting up and decorating the rooms and the snack bar (1 – 4 x per month, ca. 1 h)
• Taking care of the snack bar during the event, giving out the food (1 – 4 x per month, ca. 1 – 4 h)
• Tidying up the rooms, washing the dishes, cleaning the kitchen (1 – 4 x per month, ca. 1 – 4 h)
You should be reliable and open for intercultural exchange!
For this volunteering opportunity you don't need any German skills.
It is ok to only help once.
Am I covered by accident and/or casualty insurance during the project?
