About the volunteering opportunity

Leisure time partnership with primary school child from Neukölln

Often the talents of Neuköllner children remain unrecognized, but they have a lot to offer: Many of them get to know several cultures from an early age and grow up multilingual. They are eager for knowledge, enthusiastic and give those who work with them enriching insights into new worlds. The "Neuköllner Talente" project brings children of primary school age together with volunteers in 1:1 recreational partnerships to discover and develop the strengths and talents of the children.

How such a partnership can look like you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lraaFLweOm0

Your Tasks

Would you like to do voluntary work in Neukölln? Do you believe that all children should have the same opportunities to discover and develop their strengths?

Become a mentor with the "Neuköllner Talents" and once a week for a year explore with a child of primary school age his or her wishes, interests and talents.

Whether riding a bike together, playing football, flying kites, doing handicrafts, cooking or reading: Our Neukölln talents are curious and have lots of questions for you. Mentors are not supposed to track down high talents. It's much more about developing a relationship of trust with your godchild and having fun together.

What do we offer you during the partnership?

  • There are regular mentor meetings (every 1-2 months), free further education and free tickets
  • We are available at any time for individual questions/needs for discussion.
  • On request we also offer you an external supervision.
  • Several times a year there are common activities like excursions and parties
  • At least 1 time per month you will get an individual feedback about your partnership
  • After the end of the first year of partnership there will be a joint meeting to look back and look forward
  • Certificate of participation, Berlin volunteer pass or volunteer card on request

Whats needed

You should bring empathy, reliability and joy in dealing with children. You should also be safe in Berlin for the next 12 months and have enough time to meet with your godchild once a week for 2-3 hours.

You will fit into our team if

You will fit into our project if you feel like breaking through the usual hierarchies between "helpers" and "those in need of help" and if you would like to get involved with a partnership to meet and learn together at eye level with your godchild and his or her family. Because you as a godparent and your godchild profit equally from your partnership; you both get to know new worlds, discover new places and activities and build up a relationship or friendship.

We also work with flat hierarchies within the team. The ideal of mutual recognition and appreciation is not only a cornerstone in the communication with godparents, children and families, but is also lived within the project team.
