Every day tons of perfectly good, edible food is thrown away in Berlin. Fresh nourishment that could help many Berliners in need if it were distributed properly - something that the Berliner Tafel e.V. has been accomplishing successfully since 1993, For 25 years, Berliner Tafel members and volunteers have been rescuing donated food, sorting it, and delivering it to social and charitable organizations throughout the city.More about the organisation
Every day, vehicles depart from the Berliner Tafel headquarters and drive through the whole city to rescue food from supermarkets and other sponsors. You will help us unload the vehicles and bring the food into the warehouse where it will be sorted. After a short introduction, you will be ready to help along with other volunteers.
Together with staff members and other volunteers, you will help us unload the rescued food from the vehicles. Sometimes vehicles also need to be loaded so they can go out on food delivery tours.
Here you can find our info sheet:
You should be physically fit, as you sometimes have to lift heavy loads and operate a pallet truck. Experience with pallet trucks is therefore very welcome! Since work instructions will be given in German and not all members of staff speak English, we require volunteers to have medium level skills in German. You should also be able to proactively approach others and ask them for directions and help.
Please note: For this volunteering opportunity, you need German skills on the level „Medium German skills“.
Due to the current situation, we ask you to pay special attention to the following hygiene guidelines:
As the cars return from the tours at irregular intervals, there may be idle times or waiting times until there is something to do again. During this time you can take a break, have a coffee, lunch, or just sit in the sun (or shade). :)
It is ok to only help once.
