Computer Upcycling Instead of Electronic Waste – Laptops, PCs, and Accessories Wanted

In-kind donation request

Weizenmühlenstr. 16 / Atelier Rheinblick, 40221 Düsseldorf

Information about the request

Description

Description:
Every year, numerous fully functional computers are discarded because they can no longer be upgraded to Windows 11. Yet these devices still have a lot of potential.

Through our project “Computer Upcycling—Turning Old into New,” we save laptops, desktop computers, and accessories from becoming electronic waste and give them a second life. Together with young people, we refurbish the devices in a way that makes technical and environmental sense.

What happens to the donated computers?

Refurbishment by Youth
In our workshops, young people learn how to reuse digital devices in a sustainable way. They professionally erase data, clean the hardware, replace hard drives with fast SSDs when necessary, expand the RAM, and perform minor repairs.

Installation of a Sustainable Operating System
Instead of an outdated system, the young people install the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) version of Ubuntu. This keeps the computers secure, up-to-date, and usable for many years—without any additional licensing costs.

Contributing to Environmental and Resource Conservation
Every reused computer saves valuable raw materials, energy, and CO₂. The production of new devices consumes large amounts of rare metals and natural resources. By extending the devices’ useful life, we actively contribute to waste reduction and the protection of our environment.

Donation to People with Low Incomes
After refurbishment, the computers are donated to socially disadvantaged individuals, families, seniors, or young people who would otherwise have only limited access to the digital world.

With your donation, you support sustainable practices, environmental education, and digital inclusion in equal measure. Together, we turn discarded technology back into valuable resources for people and the environment.
