GSBTB - Open Music Lab

Open Music Lab is a space for anyone interested in music and sound to learn how to compose, record, produce, promote and perform their own music. We provide free workshops and courses taught by experts from Berlin's vibrant community of musicians. Our aim is to connect the diverse communities of the city through music while promoting equality and a safe space within Berlin’s music scene.

It is open to all, but with a particular focus on integrating different communities within Berlin. As such we prioritise providing a space for refugees and others with difficult migration experiences, and to people identifying as female.

We provide weekly workshops ranging from building a basic microphone to learning to mix and master a track, from learning about harmony and scales to writing your own lyrics, from sampling to using synthesisers. These give participants of any level a chance to see the latest software and music creation tools, as well as showing them how to find cheap or free alternatives in order to learn in their own time.

We also run a month-long beginners’ course in music production, introducing students to the tools that Ableton Live offers and explaining some of the concepts of production, recording and electronic music.
