The Real Junk Food Project Berlin is part of a global network tackling food waste.
We want to help to reduce food waste by turning surplus fruit and veg into delicious delicatessen and healthy meals that are provided to the public and other social projects and events (usually connected with sustainability and/or social issues). We bring people together and share the joy of cooking and eating together while serving a great cause of preventing food waste.
By hosting workshops, cooking events and talks, we want to raise awareness towards the massive problem of global food waste and ways to tackle it.

Target group(s)
Everyone is welcome. Cooking and eating brings together people from different cultures and backgrounds. A lively exchange is created and interesting encounters and friendships arer developed, while food is chopped, stirred and eaten.
Our aim is to raise awareness on the issue of food waste in the wider public and address a broad audience and different groups.

At the moment the project is mainly financed by donations. We do not receive any financing or subsidies (at the moment). (In the future we want to apply for grants and expand our fundraising. At the moment we unfortunately still lack the time and humanpower for this)
Occasionally, we offer classical catering as well as workshops with budget. This serves also as our fundraising.
The income is supporting our one full-time employee of the project. He receives financial support of about 500-800 Euro per month, with an average working time of 30-40 hours per week.
The other part of income is used to cover our costs, like kitchen rents, transport (carsharing) for events, materials, extra ingriedents we need like e.g. herbs.
Objectives
Every day, tons of food and valuable resources are thrown away. At the same time, people are starving or suffer from malnutrition, also in the western world. The approach of this project is to collect food which was supposed to be thrown away out by supermarkets or traders and cannot be sold due to e.g. optical defects, but are still completely edible. The collected food is processed by cooks and a dedicated, intercultural team of volunteers into high quality, healthy and tasty dishes and made available to the public on a pay-as-you-feel basis, and for other events.
