About the volunteering opportunity
Refugees have a very difficult time on the Munich housing market. As a result, they often live in collective accommodation for longer than expected. When they do find an apartment, they initially face a number of challenges. Whether it's a deposit, apartment registration, utility bills or house rules - many things need to be explained at the beginning. Under certain circumstances, unexpectedly high additional payments for electricity or heating costs may arise, or conflicts may arise with the landlord or the building community.
We are looking for committed people to support individuals or families who are moving out of collective accommodation for refugees. You will accompany them for up to three months, from preparing to move out to settling into their new environment.
Your profile:
- Own experience on the rental market (as a tenant or landlord)
- You can explain difficult texts, e.g. contracts, in simple language
- Patience and open-mindedness
Time required: As required and by individual agreement for a period of up to three months.
Location: Munich city area
Our services:
- Both sides benefit from the exchange with people from different cultural backgrounds. You gain insights and experience that you can learn from yourself.
- There are dedicated contact persons to answer your questions and provide you with advice and support
- We provide information material on the subject of housing and renting
- Regular exchange with other volunteers
- Free further training courses
- Reimbursement of expenses as well as accident and liability insurance as part of your volunteer work
Your Tasks
If a family or individual is moving out and would like support, we will contact you. If you have time for the desired support, we will arrange an initial meeting to get to know each other. You arrange further appointments independently. Topics for support can be, for example
- Going through the tenancy agreement together
- Service charges - the "second rent"
- Energy costs: saving electricity and proper ventilation
- Discuss house rules, e.g. garbage, quiet times
- Bureaucracy after the move
- Contacts of important advice centers in the new environment
