About the volunteering opportunity
SightCity is the largest trade fair for aids for blind and visually impaired people in Germany and after a short training as a remote assistant, you will use your acquired skills for the visitors of SightCity 2025 (May 21-23, 2025 in Frankfurt am Main). You will help people find their way around the trade fair, in the hotel or on arrival and departure, or research information for them.
Your Tasks
As a remote assistant, you are the eyes of blind and visually impaired people who contact you via the TOWER app. With the help of a smartphone camera, location data and other tools, you support them with everyday challenges. Whether it's finding your way around the street, navigating through buildings, reading texts aloud, researching routes or providing information - you provide valuable support and make life easier for users.

What you can expect
- Meaningful work: support blind and visually impaired people in their everyday lives and promote participation and self-efficacy.
- On request: trainer allowance or fee
- Manageable time commitment: Your commitment comprises 24 to 29 hours, divided between your free training (end of April/beginning of May) and your work as a remote assistant at SightCity in Frankfurt (May 21-23, 2025).
- Free training: We will cover all training costs so that you are fully prepared.
- Certificate and attestation: After successfully completing the training, you will receive a certificate of participation. We will also issue you with a certificate for your volunteer work, which you can use for future applications or proof.
- Flexible way of working: Work from home, hybrid or in our offices in the Science Park Kassel.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
- Technical understanding: Confident use of devices, apps and tools as well as a willingness to learn new tools.
- Spatial orientation: Ability to estimate distances and offer navigation aids.
- Communication skills: Empathy and adaptability in communication.
- Problem-solving skills: Finding creative and quick solutions even in challenging situations.
- Willingness to self-reflect: Ability to reflect on one's own work and learn from it.
- Sense of responsibility: Careful handling of sensitive data in accordance with our data protection guidelines.
- Inclusive view of humanity: Respectful treatment in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD).
- Home office equipment (desirable): A PC with a large monitor and headset if you would like to work from home.
Time required
The exact times are still to be agreed from 20-23 May 2025. There will also be a free training course beforehand and the opportunity to gain experience in remote assistance before Sight City.

TOWER Fernassistenz

We at TOWER Fernassistenz are a young, innovative company based in the Science Park Kassel. We are developing a smart assistance service for people with visual impairments or learning difficulties that will provide you with round-the-clock support for everyday challenges. You can easily reach us via an iOS and Android app and PC access. Our trained assistants will support you spontaneously and flexibly via a secure video connection or remote access with a wide range of tasks such as PC work, orientation, general everyday problems or operating vending machines. We also offer you support in creating accessible documents and are working on the development of an AI for creating applications for aids and benefits.
A team of ten is working together with many testers from the target groups to develop the apps and service concepts.
The launch of the service is planned for early 2026, but you can already use TOWER now: Tuesday to Thursday from 12pm to 4pm. We will cover the costs. Just send an email to test@tower-assist.de! TOWER is part of Bathildisheim e.V. and is funded by the Aktion Mensch Foundation.
