About the volunteering opportunity

With the Hacker School, we are pursuing the vision that every young person should learn about programming before deciding on a career.
We go into schools to make as many children and young people as possible curious about IT topics and programming. There we reliably reach all young people between the ages of 11 and 18, especially girls and young people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Our courses take place almost daily online at schools throughout Germany and provide insights into MakeCode, HMTL/CSS or Python.

Your Tasks

Are you an IT specialist or fit in IT topics and have fun doing it? Then support us and use MakeCode to inspire pupils from year 6 online with programming and show them how interesting IT topics and the corresponding professional fields can be. MakeCode is very visually designed (like Scratch) and can be learned quickly even without extensive programming knowledge.
You support us by running a low-threshold MakeCode course - together with other volunteers and accompanied by a course leader - according to a predefined concept. You will program a small Flappy Bird game with the students. The course takes place via Zoom and you supervise a small group of up to six students. In addition to teaching the programming language, you will give the students an insight into your personal career and your profession.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
We provide you with a ready-made HTML/CSS course concept that is structured in such a way that you can run the course with little preparation. All you need is a basic knowledge of HTML/CSS or familiarize yourself with our course concept so that you can explain the individual steps to the students in your small group.
You will also be prepared for the assignment in an onboarding session. You should plan a total of approx. 2 hours for the preparation (incl. 1 hour onboarding).

The most important thing is your enthusiasm for programming topics and the desire to share this with children and young people. We look forward to meeting you!

What to bring

The engagement takes place online. You will need a PC/laptop with internet access and a webcam as well as a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.
We use the Zoom software as a conference system. Make sure that you can and are allowed to use Zoom on your end device. Especially if you are holding the event on a company device, it is important to find out about this in good time or to test it once. It is best to download the Zoom desktop app. Some features are only available here and the performance is usually better.

Important notice

Before your first assignment, it is important that you take part in a one-off onboarding (online via Zoom). The onboarding lasts 1 hour.
The school course itself lasts 4 hours plus 15 minutes before and after the course for brief preparation and follow-up. The start and end times may differ slightly from the time given here. You will of course receive all detailed information in advance!

Would you like to give a school course with your colleagues and can't find enough places here? Just get in touch with us at inspirer@hacker-school.de. We can (usually) make this possible :)
