About the volunteering opportunity
Mentoring makes you strong!
The mentoring project of our MARIE volunteering office brings together people from Berlin who want to support other people. We are looking for committed people who accompany refugees or other groups of people in need of support and make it easier for them to settle into a new environment. Personal contact at eye level in particular helps people to get to know each other better and learn from each other. Prejudices can be broken down and replaced by shared experiences.
What can we offer you?
- Individual support and advice
- Exchange and joint activities with other mentors
- Insurance cover (liability and accident insurance)
- Possibility to cover travel costs (public transport)
Your Tasks
We are currently looking for a person who would like to accompany and support a man (38 years old) from Syria as he arrives in Berlin. He would like someone to spend some time with him regularly and help him find his way in a new environment. Practicing his German language skills through conversation should also be part of the meetings.
In the future, he would also like support in finding work and accommodation, e.g. by attending counseling appointments together or writing job applications. However, not all of the topics mentioned need to be covered by the mentoring.
T. is 38 years old, comes from Syria and has been living in refugee accommodation in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark for two years. However, he is regularly in Berlin and would like to meet with a volunteer mentor once a week in Neukölln (Hermannplatz area). He worked as a bus driver in Syria. He would like to work in this profession again in the future. He has a residence permit and a work permit.
He is attending an integration course, i.e. he is currently learning German at A1 level. His native language is Arabic and he uses a translator app to help him communicate.
If you can imagine being a contact person to help him find his way in a new environment and learn German, please get in touch with us.
