About the volunteering opportunity
What is the project about?
Start with a Friend e.V. (SwaF) has been bringing people together since 2014 - people who have recently arrived in Germany (newcomers) and people who have been living here for some time (locals). In 1:1 tandems , they get to know each other, spend time together and exchange ideas - voluntarily, personally and with mutual appreciation.
Whether on a walk, in the park, doing sport or simply chatting: Genuine connections - often even friendships - develop from joint activities. In this way, we promote encounters, strengthen social participation and contribute to an immigration society based on solidarity.
SwaF is also active in Bremen with a dedicated team. We arrange tandems, facilitate exchanges and organize regular community events.

You organize your own meetings: go for a walk, cook, practise languages, talk about culture or simply spend time together. Some go to public authorities together or visit our community events.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.
What should you bring with you?

As a local, you share your experiences, your knowledge of everyday life in Bremen and open up your environment - without any obligation, but with a great impact. And of course you get a lot in return: new perspectives, exciting conversations and real encounters.

Start with a Friend connects immigrants and locals in tandems based on interests and needs. Ideally, a friendship develops out of this, but in any case, a social network is created that makes it easier for immigrants to have a good start in Germany. Start with a Friend accompanies and advises the tandems after the matching and organises events to bring the tandems into contact with each other. It is also important to us to create structures in which people can get involved, even if they are tied up in their work and family life. The time schedule is therefore flexible; further training courses are offered but are optional. So far, Start with a Friend is available in 21 cities nationwide.
