About the volunteering opportunity

Would you like to give refugees confidence?
Then become a volunteer in the Lighthouse Welcome Center team!

The Lighthouse Welcome Center is a meeting place for volunteers and refugees.
It takes place in a room in a refugee shelter on Heimeranplatz.

The people living in the accommodation have only recently arrived in Munich. They usually have few connections and many questions about life in Munich.

Your Tasks

What is your job?

  • You welcome people warmly and listen to them attentively - like a good neighbor
  • You help them find their way around, e.g. on public transport or when looking for clubs.
  • You can offer whatever you like or you can decide together what you want to do: play cards, learn German or just talk.
What do you gain?

  • You are never alone: As a volunteer, you always work with at least two people
  • Intercultural exchange: You get to know people from different cultures and can share your experiences.
  • Practical integration: You help the residents with your everyday knowledge. For example, you can answer questions about everyday life, customs and authorities.
  • Help on a small scale: You experience how important a simple round of UNO or a friendly conversation is for people in difficult situations.
  • Flexibility: You decide when and how you get involved. Usually once a week for 2 hours
A volunteer coordinator will brief you, supervise and support you. And you receive free training.

Location

Lighthouse Welcome Center

The Lighthouse Welcome Center is a cooperation project between Diakonie München und Oberbayern gGmbH and Lichterkette e.V.. It is a mobile service for refugees. The Lighthouse goes to shelters that have a need. It stays there for several months. Volunteers come to the Lighthouse, open it up and listen to the refugees. They talk, play games together and, depending on their needs, learn German, play sports, explore the neighborhood or do other things. The aim of this project is to support refugees in line with their needs and enable them to interact with volunteers on an equal footing. The Lighthouse Welcome Center brings a piece of welcome culture to Munich.
