About the volunteering opportunity
With our reading club, we want to teach children and young people with and without refugee experience the joy of reading and encourage them to engage creatively with language. If possible, the children's own language of origin can also be incorporated. How you implement this is up to your creative freedom: You can discover stories together, gather ideas, try them out and play games together.
Your Tasks
Our reading club should become a shared space - a place that you create together, that develops in a lively, loving and dynamic way and where the interests of the children and young people take center stage. Books, tablets and other materials are provided by Stiftung Lesen.
Why your commitment is worthwhile
You will be part of a creative, open and lively project that gives children the joy of stories, language and community. You will help create a space where children can contribute their ideas and where you can build something together that grows and is fun. At the same time, you will receive inspiration, exchange and support - and experience moments that are also valuable and enriching for you personally.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
What we want from you
- You already have experience working with children and young people, ideally also with children who have fled their home country. You enjoy showing them how diverse and creative reading and the use of language can be - and accompany them with curiosity and openness.
- You are open, patient and passionate about volunteering.
- Knowledge of foreign languages (e.g. Arabic, Persian, Kurdish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Russian ...) is an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
What you should bring with you
- You are of legal age.
- You have already worked with children (on a voluntary or professional basis)
- You work responsibly, reliably and independently.
- You are willing to take part in training courses twice a year to further develop your knowledge and your organizational skills.
- You keep attendance records for every appointment.
- You have or apply for an extended certificate of good conduct (in Berlin we can do this for you).
- You have a measles certificate or an antibody test.
- You speak German to at least C1 level.
Time required
Regularly
Approx. 4 hours per week.

We take our time.
Berlin schoolchildren deserve that we take time for them. That's what we do - in various programs such as Sprachbrücken, Mobile Jugend-Lern-Hilfe.jetzt, Fit für die Schule and Lernförderung an Gemeinschaftsunterkünften. With strong partners, we can offer a wide range of services and enable children and young people to have a good and successful learning time.
