About the volunteering opportunity
The Kiezgarten at BENN Wartenberg is an open meeting and learning space in the middle of Neuwartenberg/Neu-Hohenschönhausen where neighbors can garden together, exchange ideas and experience nature. Our garden combines neighborhood, sustainability and co-creation: people of all ages and backgrounds can get active here, learn new things and help shape their own neighborhood. Many of our active gardeners are not from Germany, which is why intercultural skills are also very important.
Your Tasks
Your tasks
- Maintaining and designing our neighborhood garden: watering, weeding, planting and simple gardening work.
- Helping to organize activities and projects in the garden (e.g. raised beds, herbs, community activities).
- Support with events, workshops or small projects in the garden.
- Being a contact person for visitors and participants to create a friendly and open atmosphere.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
What you bring with you
- Enjoy working outdoors and an interest in nature, plants and urban gardening.
- Experience with neighborhood and neighborhood-organized garden projects.
- Ideally, experience in leading groups whose members are often very diverse.
- Willingness to take on responsibility and get involved on a regular basis.
- Openness in dealing with people from different backgrounds and origins.
- Reliability and preparation: Plan some time to prepare for gardening activities and arrive on time for the agreed dates. The garden group will meet every Friday between 3:30 and 6:00 pm from March/April until November.

The garden group always meets between 3:30 and 6:00 pm between March / April and the beginning of November. Sometimes it also needs more time, for example when building materials etc. have to be procured.

Important: We ask that you only register as a neighborhood garden leader if you have the necessary experience and commitment. If you simply want to join in and support the garden, you can become part of our neighborhood garden group at any time.
For the successful management of the neighborhood garden group, an exercise leader allowance is paid.

BENN - Berlin Develops New Neighbourhoods is a program of the Berlin Senate that strengthens social cohesion and integration in neighbourhoods in cooperation with the district authorities. The BENN Wartenberg site has been in operation since January 2022, connecting neighbors and initiating projects around the refugee accommodation in Neuhohenschönhausen. The aim is to bring people from different backgrounds together, develop ideas and revitalize the neighbourhood.
