About the volunteering opportunity

A volunteering opportunity by KINDERHILFE - Help for children with cancer and serious illnesses

 ***Difficult language, see below***
Sometimes someone becomes so seriously ill that they may die. When a child becomes so seriously ill, the whole family is very frightened. The parents have a lot to worry about. For example, making sure that the sick child is not alone in hospital or that a nurse picks the child up from school in the afternoon. We don't want a family to be alone and offer our help.
*** difficult language *** Kinderhilfe's outpatient children's hospice service provides psychosocial support to families in which a child or young person has a life-shortening or life-threatening illness and strengthens the entire family system in a resource-oriented manner. The support usually takes place at home, sometimes also in the clinic.

Your Tasks

***Difficult language, see below***
Volunteers in our association spend time with a family where a child is seriously ill. Sometimes, for example, they take a child to the playground or visit the sick child in hospital.

Helping a family is a difficult task. That's why volunteers first learn how to do this in a course with us. Then they help a family. A new course will probably start in 2027. If you would like to take part, please let us know now.

***difficult language***
A large part of this work is carried out by volunteer family mentors who regularly visit families at home or in the clinic and spend time with one or more family members (e.g. trips to the playground with siblings, visits to the clinic, being a conversation partner). Usually for about 2-3 hours per week.

A preparatory course is mandatory for this volunteer position, which covers various topics that are important for the volunteer position (e.g. communication, self-care, grief). The course comprises 100 hours and can be applied for as training time in Berlin. The next course is expected to start in 2027. Please contact us now if you are interested.
