About the volunteering opportunity
Not every child starts life with the same prerequisites.
But sometimes all it takes is a reliable person at your side to make new paths possible.
But sometimes all it takes is a reliable person at your side to make new paths possible.
At KinderHelden, adults get involved as mentors for primary school children with difficult starting conditions. As part of 1:1 mentoring, you will accompany a child from the Albert Schweitzer School for at least one year. You form a fixed tandem and meet once a week for around two hours.
You decide together what this time will look like: learning together, playing together or exploring the city together. In addition to academic support, the focus is also on strengthening and encouraging your mentee. This is because children develop important skills, especially during their primary school years. You, as a constant caregiver, can help build self-confidence, discover talents and open up new perspectives.
Perhaps you are the person who shows a child: I believe in you.
And perhaps you too will discover how enriching this commitment can be for you personally.

Your Tasks
As a KinderHeld*in, you accompany a primary school child as part of a fixed 1:1 tandem. You meet once a week for about two hours and organize your time together individually.
During the meetings, you read, learn and laugh together. You support the child with school topics, practise reading or arithmetic, undertake small activities or get creative - depending on what you feel like doing as a team. The focus is not on performance, but on the relationship: listening, encouraging and being there reliably.
You don't need any previous teaching experience. What is important is that you enjoy working with children, are reliable and open-minded. KinderHelden prepares you carefully for your volunteer work, ensures a suitable match and supports you professionally and personally throughout the tandem.
You can make the difference between giving up and blossoming. Join in and become a KinderHeld:in.

What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.
You don't need to have any previous teaching experience, as you will be prepared for your new role in a preparatory workshop. We will also provide you with individually tailored learning materials and further tips for activities. Throughout the year, you will receive pedagogical support from full-time employees who will be available to you as contact persons during your involvement.
Time required
Project-based
Ideally, you should have around 2 hours once a week in the afternoon to meet with a child and support and strengthen them individually. The times can be arranged flexibly with the child.
Before the start of the commitment, we will get to know you in a personal meeting (lasting approx. 45 minutes) via video call. This is followed by the introductory workshop for our volunteers, which lasts around 3 hours. This takes place as a webinar.
Important notice
An extended police clearance certificate without entry must be presented before the first personal meeting with the child. This is available free of charge with our application for volunteers.
