About the volunteering opportunity
In June 2008, the 45th LAIB und SEELE distribution point of the Berliner Tafel was opened in the Philippus Church in Tegel-Süd. Since then, the volunteers have collected around 475 tons of food donations and distributed around 145,000 shopping bags of food such as fruit, vegetables, refrigerated goods and baked goods to people on low incomes and families with children. LAIB und SEELE thus gives people on low incomes access to healthy food.
Every Friday and Saturday, the drivers from the distribution center drive to around 40 supermarkets and other stores to collect donations. The food is then sorted and the Philippus Church in Ascheberger Weg is transformed into a small supermarket.
On Saturday at 13:30, the drop-off begins. Individuals and families with children can shop for a symbolic amount of 1.50 euros per person. It is often 4 p.m. before the church is ready for a service again.

Your Tasks
this work would not be possible without the many volunteers. So if you have time on Fridays or Saturdays and are looking for a meaningful task, you are very welcome. There are the following areas in which you can become active in a distribution center:
- Driving service: The driving service of a distribution center collects the food from the supermarkets and brings it to the distribution center.
- Sorting and distribution: The volunteers receive the unsorted food from the transport service. Goods that are no longer suitable for consumption are disposed of; the remaining food is prepared for distribution. When the food is handed out, it has to be sorted so that there is enough for everyone. You will talk to people and hand out fruit, vegetables and bread.

For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.

The Protestant parish of Tegel-Borsigwalde is a lively, diverse parish in the north of Berlin that is involved in traditional church work as well as many social, cultural and community activities. It is part of the Reinickendorf church district in Berlin and was formed in 2019 from a merger of four parishes in Tegel and Borsigwalde.
