About the volunteering opportunity
What is it all about? The house sparrow has almost disappeared from many German cities - even in Düsseldorf its colonies are becoming smaller and smaller. Yet it is an important indicator of urban biodiversity: where sparrows live, the ecological balance is right.
With Düsselspatz, an initiative under the umbrella of Pro Düsseldorf e.V., we want to track down existing sparrow populations in the city, secure them in the long term and improve them. To this end, we are looking for committed sparrow patrons to take over and support a colony in their neighborhood.
Your Tasks
What can you expect?
- Locate and document sparrow sites in your area
- Regularly observe your colony and monitor the population
- Approach building owners and persuade them to protect sparrows - e.g. by providing nesting aids, preserving breeding sites or planting sparrow-friendly vegetation
- If necessary, implement small measures yourself (install nesting aids, etc.)
- Share your observations with the Düsselspatz team
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
What do you bring with you?
- Curiosity and attention for sparrows and nature in your neighborhood
- Reliability, the sparrows need someone who will stick with them
- Good communication skills, you can approach owners openly and convincingly
- Knowledge of birds and nature is very welcome, you should already recognize sparrows ;-)
