About the volunteering opportunity
Hedges are the lifelines of the agricultural landscape: They provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for birds, insects, and mammals. Together with farmer Thorsten Quast, we’re planting a new, colorful hedge made up of native shrubs and trees. It will grow in two rows in a field whose unique microclimate further enhances ecological diversity. Help us make this hedge a reality!
What are our plans?
At the edge of the cattle pasture, we’re planting a double-row hedge made up of various native species such as hawthorn, hazel, and dog rose. This mix provides flowers, fruits, and structural interest almost all year round.

Where are we planting?
Thorsten Quast is committed to preserving the cultural landscape and protecting nature on the outskirts of the city. He regularly carries out restoration projects on his land. Together with school classes and the farmers’ association, he has already revitalized hedgerows and planted wild hedges that create habitats for deer, birds, and many other animals.

Your Tasks
Planting shrubs.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, basic German skills are required.
No prior experience is necessary—our planting team will provide a hands-on introduction, and we look forward to welcoming anyone who wants to try something new.
What to bring
Above all, bring a good attitude and a desire to enjoy the fresh air and damp soil! We’ll provide plenty of tools. But feel free to bring your own shovel or gardening gloves—that helps because we don’t always have a shovel for every participant in larger groups. Other than that, please be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. When you register, you’ll receive a checklist so you don’t forget anything important.
Time required

Important notice
Our motto is: Nature conservation with a touch of indulgence! That’s why we always provide a light breakfast snack and a delicious hot lunch. Whenever possible, we enjoy tasty meals provided by the farms where we’re planting. We’ll do our best to accommodate special dietary needs if you provide the relevant information on the registration form. As for beverages, we’ll have plenty of water (still and sparkling) for everyone, and we’ll provide tea and coffee whenever you’d like.
