About the volunteering opportunity
The Bickendorfer Fahrradbüdchen is a self-help bicycle repair shop for the entire district and is a project of Aktion Nachbarschaft e. V.. People have the opportunity to repair their bicycles themselves for a voluntary donation and on their own responsibility. Volunteers provide guidance and practical knowledge in line with the principle of helping people to help themselves.
The aim of the Fahrradbüdchen is to make the district more mobile and to create an open meeting place for the neighborhood. People from the neighborhood come into contact with each other, work on bicycles together and exchange ideas. Repaired bicycles can be taken away at cost price. The aim is to create a place of exchange, cooperation and mutual support in front of the workshop that promotes sustainable mobility and social participation.
Your Tasks
As a volunteer mechanic at the Fahrradbüdchen, you will help people to repair their bikes themselves. The focus is not on quick repairs, but on doing, explaining and learning together.
Your tasks will include, among other things
- Helping visitors to repair their bikes independently (e.g. adjusting brakes, checking gears, patching tires)
- Explaining work steps, tools and safety aspects in an understandable way
- Encouraging people to try things out for themselves - even if they are unsure or have little previous experience
- Assessing when guidance is useful and when restraint is appropriate
- Contributing to an open, respectful atmosphere in the workshop
- Participating in the bike shop as a meeting place for the neighborhood: engaging in conversation, listening, helping to create a friendly environment
- Collaboration with other volunteers and full-time staff
Repairs are carried out by users on their own responsibility and for a voluntary donation. Your role is supportive, not executive.

What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, basic German skills are required.
In addition to basic technical knowledge, working in a bike shop requires a certain attitude towards people and learning.
Technical requirements
- Basic knowledge of bicycle repair (no formal training required, but practical experience)
- Willingness to pass on your own knowledge and learn new things yourself
- Interest in sustainable mobility and resource conservation
Social and personal requirements
- Enjoy working with people from very different backgrounds
- Patience, openness and the ability to explain things calmly and appreciatively
- Sensitivity to social inequalities, different life situations and experiences of discrimination
- Willingness to self-reflect on your own role and attitude
- Acceptance that the Fahrradbüdchen is not just a workshop, but also a social meeting place

The Office for Civic Commitment of the AWO Cologne is a consulting service. People who are willing to volunteer will receive advice and will be placed in organisations that work with volunteers. Further priority will be given to LESEMENTOR Cologne, young volunteers, further education and voluntary refugee work.
