About the volunteering opportunity

We are looking for you as a volunteer reader! We are reading to children at primary schools and public libraries in the Munich area who never or rarely benefit from the pleasure of being read to. This often includes children with a newcomer background but also German kids who are able to develop their vocabulary and language skills in a playful way. Our aim is to bring children in contact with books and to encourage them to read themselves. A minimum time commitment of half a year is key for this project as continuity and reliability are important for the children. The reading hours are always a positive moment in the weekly schedule.

Your Tasks

Once a week for one hour you are reading to children at primary schools or public libraries. The books that you are reading to the children are up to you but we also provide tips on our homepage www.lesefuechse.org. Everyone with enough time and love for kids can become a Lesefuchs. Potential volunteers should plan to read to children once a week for a minimum period of time of six months. This helps create trust with the kids. All new volunteer readers will receive training.

What's needed

Volunteers must be native German speakers.
For the intro session, no specific documents or competencies are required. For the project itself, you should bring along patience for kids, who are partly not yet fully attentive for a long(er) period of time, and enthusiasm for children's literature. In addition, we require all volunteer readers to provide a certificate of good conduct. The documents are provided after an initial meeting with an active reader. During your volunteer commitment, we invite you to participate in the seminar "Lebendig vorlesen" ("read out loud lifely") that is free of charge for our readers.

Where?

Lesefüchse e.V.

Lesefüchse e.V. is a charitable organisation and one of the biggest regional reading initiatives in Germany. Since its founding in October 2003, about 300 volunteers have been involved regularly in the project today. Our Lesefüchse volunteers reach more than 1000 children on a weekly basis who enchant children with magic stories while encouraging them to read themselves at different locations in Munich such as public libraries, primary schools, special needs educational center. The organisation specifically targets children from socially disadvantaged families and families with migration backgrounds. During the reading hours, the four to eleven year old kids can experience how storytelling can inspire imagination. Through regular reading, listening and storytelling, children can playfully develop their vocabulary and their verbal skills.
