About the volunteering opportunity
The content and scope of a tandem partnership ranges from joint leisure activities to organizing a place in a daycare center and applying for a university place. Some tandems simply spend their free time together.
The locals give the immigrants access to their living environment and activate their own networks, which promotes language acquisition and entry into the job market in particular. In the same way, they open up their environment to the locals and reduce fear of contact and prejudices.
What do I need to bring as a local?
Anyone who wants to exchange ideas and meet new people can become a tandem partner. It is important to us that there is an openness to learning from each other. As a general rule, everyone should plan around two hours a week for their tandem.
In addition to a tandem partnership, you can also get involved in the local volunteer teams as a mediator, PR or at events.

Your Tasks
Start with a Friend connects immigrants and locals to form tandems based on interests and needs. Ideally, this results in a friendship, but in any case a social network is created that makes it easier for immigrants to get off to a good start in Germany. Start with a Friend accompanies and advises the tandems after matching and organizes events to bring the tandems into contact with each other. It is also important to us to create structures in which people with work and family commitments can also get involved. The time allocation is therefore flexible, further training courses are offered, but are optional. Start with a Friend is currently available in 21 cities across Germany.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
It would be great if you had 2 hours a week for your activities as a tandem partner. What you actually do with your tandem partner, when and where you meet, is up to you or will be arranged in consultation with your tandem partner. Start with a Friend provides exciting encounters and enriching experiences. We meet each participant personally and bring you into contact with each other according to your interests, professional background and needs.
