About the volunteering opportunity

During the winter months, from November through April, the Berlin City Mission operates a total of four emergency shelters.
Many people who would otherwise have to spend the night outside in the cold receive shelter, food, clothing, medical care, counseling, and emotional support here.
Volunteers who work on a regular basis and perform particularly responsible tasks receive an expense allowance of 7.50 euros per hour.

Your Tasks

Job Description: You’ll be working in the evenings or at night. Your responsibilities are varied: they range from greeting guests and checking them in, managing entry, baggage check-in, building relationships and connections with homeless guests, to assisting with meal service and preparation, in the dishwashing area, the clothing closet, supporting guests with limited mobility, and in the sleeping quarters.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
Requirements: We will provide training for this volunteer position through seminars. Attendance is mandatory (to register for an introductory seminar, please click here ).
The minimum age is 18. Fluency in German is required. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, we recommend consulting with your doctor and the facility’s management to ensure your own safety. Unfortunately, participation is not possible if you are pregnant.

Here’s why you’ll enjoy this volunteer role: You’re open to understanding the life situations of homeless people. You stay organized and enjoy working as part of a team. You are reliable and enjoy taking on responsibility. Most importantly: You listen attentively to our guests and interact with them in a caring, tolerant, fair, and de-escalating manner.
You treat everyone with kindness, respect, and as an equal.
