About the volunteering opportunity
Are you interested in getting involved in development cooperation? In helping people who are less fortunate than we are? In working with people around the world to develop sustainable projects together?
Then you’ve come to the right place. We are the Aachen chapter of the Germany-wide association Engineers Without Borders e.V., and we’re currently running five technical development cooperation projects based in Aachen. To carry out these projects, we’re always looking for interested and dedicated people of all ages and professions (especially non-engineers, such as computer scientists, educators, and designers). You’re also welcome to approach us at any time with your own project ideas.
Here’s a brief look at our areas of focus:
Our project groups are working on a variety of solutions to sustainably improve local living conditions. Our current focus is on the following areas:

Infrastructure & Building Construction: In Uganda, we plan and construct housing tailored to the needs of teachers to strengthen the educational environment in the long term. At the same time, we’re working to standardize our proven building systems.

Water, Sanitation & Solar (WASH): In cooperation with other regional groups, we are introducing combined systems comprising safe water supply, sustainable dry-separation toilets, and solar energy to rural regions of Sierra Leone.

Renewable Energy: In Nepal, we ensure electricity and energy supply at schools through solar systems and lightning protection measures, and we are currently focusing on sustainable biogas solutions.

Education & Domestic Work: We’re making a difference right here in Aachen, too. Through our “Gazebo” integration project, we organize intercultural project days on the topic of global learning at local schools.

Your Tasks
We have a variety of tasks that you can take on. These depend on the focus of the project and the current project phase. So you can bring in your previous knowledge or try your hand at something completely new!
To give you a taste, here are a few sample tasks:
- Collaborating on the elaboration of technical concepts (e.g. construction of dry separation toilets, conceptual design and improvement of energy networks)
- Collaborating on the elaboration of educational concepts (e.g. workshops on hygiene)
- Conceptualization and implementation of teaching days at schools in Aachen and surroundings
- Organization of events, campaigns and booths
- Collaboration in the maintenance and improvement of our Digital Collaboration Platform (Open Project, Nextcloud)
- Having fun at team-internal events :-)

For this volunteering opportunity, basic German skills are required.

With us, you can contribute as much time as you can and as you like. In order to actively participate and also be able to take on independent tasks, you should, however, already plan five hours per week.
When you invest your time is up to you. Each project has a group meeting in the week of about two hours (voluntary participation), the rest of the time can be freely divided.

Engineers Without Borders is a non-profit recognised private aid organisation. The aim of Engineers Without Borders is to improve the living conditions of needy and disadvantaged people in the long term.
