About the volunteering opportunity

As a hospice companion, you visit people in their last phase of life where they live: At home or in various facilities. Our hospice association accompanies adults of all ages. The visits take place 1-2 times a week for about 90 minutes. Depending on the arrangement, more often.

Knowledge of nursing is not necessary. Everything that is important for the hospice work is taught in the training and in information events by the coordinators.

Your Tasks

  • Accompanying people in their last phase of life
  • Being there
  • Listening and telling stories
  • Small trips outside, if possible
  • Talking about life and death - according to the wishes of the sick and their relatives
  • Accompanying the relatives during the dying phase
  • Participation in the regular group meetings

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.

  • Willingness to deal with the topics of death and mourning, also in view of one's own personal experiences

We offer for all prospective hospice companion a founded, free training, which extends over five weekends and within max. two years must be completed.

The dates for company are then individually, according to your possibilities with the full-time co-ordinators co-ordinated.

Once in the month a group meeting with the other volunteers takes place.

Where?

Hospiz Bedburg Bergheim Elsdorf e.V.

We are anmbulanter hospice service, provide psychosocial support for people on their last journey through life and their relatives. Three full-time staff are responsible for counseling, administration and coordination of the accompaniments.

About 32 trained volunteers visit people where they live: At home or in facilities of all kinds. Six trained Trauerbegleiter:innen also take care of bereaved relatives and other people in mourning (eg in the mourning café or in individual meetings).

The board of the association is also volunteers (currently four people) and responsible for personnel, finances, representative tasks.

We also run a grief chat for young people: www.doch-etwas-bleibt.de The chat is represented on Vostel in a proprietary account and currently has 14 volunteers.
