About the volunteering opportunity
A team of volunteers writes and designs the Spät Lese magazine. The articles and texts contain interviews and portraits of committed people, older people and employees from the four Unionhilfswerk care homes. There are also overarching sections such as "Then and now" and "Discovered in Berlin". Spät Lese is read with enthusiasm by older people in need of care and their relatives and loved ones. We are now looking for reinforcements!
What commitments are we looking for for the Spät Lese editorial team?
1 editor for nursing home Am Plänterwald, Berlin-Treptow
1 editor for Am Kreuzberg care home, Berlin-Kreuzberg
1 editor for the general sections, research throughout Berlin and perhaps also in Brandenburg.

Your Tasks
You conduct interviews with committed people, older people and employees from the care homes and present them in portraits. You will accompany events in the care home as well as excursions and report on them. You contribute creatively with ideas for possible articles for the overarching sections such as "Then and now" and "Discovered in Berlin" and report on them editorially. In discussions with employees from the care homes, such as social workers and employment staff, you will learn new things and get ideas for new articles.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
You should enjoy talking to a wide variety of people as well as full-time staff and occasionally have time during the day. Ideally, you should be competent in dealing with texts, already have editorial experience or experience in writing texts and also enjoy taking photos. It would be good if you could take part in the editorial meetings (once a quarter). You can arrange the dates with the editorial team.
Time required
The Spät Lese magazine is published four times a year. Each issue requires different contributions from the editors from each of the four care homes and the overarching sections. The texts, interviews, discussions and research take varying amounts of time. On average, it takes 7-8 hours per month. It is good if you have time to contribute for 8 issues or 2 years. Building relationships with people in care homes and being recognized as a contact person takes time.
Important notice
The experienced editors will be happy to look over your first texts and give you tips. They will also edit the final rough draft before it goes to print.
