About the volunteering opportunity
The reception centre Askanierring is looking for several volunteers to accompany and support the refugees during visits to the doctor, visits to the authorities and other appointments. Language skills of the respective residents are not required.
The refugees living in the reception centre are new to Germany and Berlin and do not know their way around this big city. It is therefore a matter of accompanying them on their way, showing them which means of transport to use, how to buy a ticket from a ticket machine, how a visit to the doctor works, and so on.
Your Tasks
Accompanying the refugees on their way to doctor's appointments, appointments with authorities and other appointments, giving them courage, encouraging them to arrive in Berlin.
What's needed
Empathy, intercultural competence. Language skills in Turkish, Russian, Georgian, Serbian, Farsi/Dari, Arabic or Kurdish are an advantage, but not a requirement.
Time required
It varies - the times depend on the needs of the residents.
Important notice
The open office hours of the volunteer coordination is on Mondays between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm (there may be waiting times). Other appointments are arranged individually. What is required:
- Extended certificate of good conduct (free of charge for volunteers; we can take care of the application if you wish).
- Proof of immunization against measles (for persons born after 1969).
