About the volunteering opportunity

At the outpatient children's hospice service Berliner Herz, we train people to become volunteer family companions who relieve the daily lives of families, cohabiting couples and single parents with a child, adolescent or young adult with a life-shortening illness up to the age of 27.

Family companions stand by the parents' side, spend time with the sick child, accompany them on visits to the doctor and hospital or support the sibling with homework, play, laugh and celebrate with them and offer leisure activities. With great dedication, they promote the well-being and quality of life of the entire family system. They create free space for all family members and enable normality in a permanent state of emergency.

Your Tasks

The tasks of our time donors are very diverse and individual. The support can look very different - depending on the needs of the family:

  • Caring for the sick child or siblings

  • Being a discussion partner for parents, relatives and friends

  • Accompaniment to medical appointments or visits to the authorities

  • Support in crises - also during hospital stays

We are always keen to prepare you well for this voluntary work and to match you with the right family. It should be a positive experience for everyone!

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
We do not require any special skills. Twice a year, we offer a course in which our volunteers receive intensive training.

Time required

You will be prepared for this demanding honorary position in a course. In 100 hours, we offer you a diverse range of topics, in which you deal intensively with the content of dying, death and mourning and the accompaniment of families.

Once you have completed the training, the time allocation, in consultation with the families, takes place individually.
