About the volunteering opportunity

For Mrs. Sch., an 80-year-old resident with mild dementia in our "Am Sportforum" residential community, we are looking for a volunteer, ideally a woman who can visit once a week. Mrs. Sch. is mobile and still goes to the doctor alone, for example, but needs regular social interaction and variety in her everyday life. She spends a lot of time alone in her room, watching television and has little contact with the other residents who no longer speak. As a former teacher of Russian and German, Ms. Sch. has a passion for languages and is particularly interested in Russian. If the volunteer also speaks Russian, this could be an exciting topic of conversation. Ms. Sch. has also worked in a college for young officers in the army and is interested in new experiences and activities.

Your involvement can make a big difference in Ms. Sch.'s life and provide her with a welcome change of pace and social interaction.

We thank you in advance for your valuable support!

Your Tasks

  • Regular visits to Mrs. Sch., ideally once a week
  • Have empathetic conversations and give Mrs. Sch. the opportunity to talk to others
  • Plan and carry out joint activities, such as walks in nearby parks, visits to cafés or excursions to new parts of Berlin
  • Find interesting topics of conversation, especially in the areas of languages, literature and the military, to entertain Ms. Sch

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.

  • Empathy and sensitivity in dealing with older people
  • Interest in cultural activities and a willingness to try new experiences
  • If possible, knowledge of Russian to talk to Ms. Sch. about her passion for languages
  • Patience and understanding of Ms. Sch.'s individual needs and the ability to adapt to her situation
