About the volunteering opportunity

Volunteering gives you the chance to pursue a meaningful, personally enriching activity. You can express your compassion and come into contact with like-minded people who are happy about your dedication and commitment.

The Lazarus Hospice offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities. The main work is the care of the dying, where you can:

  • Assist people in their final hours
  • build trusting relationships with seriously ill people and their relatives
  • Go for walks, cook and bake, fulfill last wishes

When you start volunteering at Lazarus Hospice, we will invite you to a personal interview where you can compare your ideas with our conditions and clarify all your questions with us.

Your Tasks

We offer a training course to prepare people who would like to become involved in direct end-of-life care for this demanding task. Participants in this preparatory course declare in advance their willingness to volunteer in our hospice service for at least two years, i.e. once or twice a week for one to two hours.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
The preparatory course for "Voluntary hospice companions" gently introduces participants to the psychosocial support of seriously ill and dying people and their relatives. The preparatory course is led by palliative care specialists and supplemented by external experts. The course comprises a total of 124 teaching hours. The course is divided into a basic course and an advanced course with the opportunity to begin practical work in accompanying people in their final phase of life.

Basic course

The basic course has two week blocks. You can apply for educational leave for these two weeks. In addition, the basic course takes place over a weekend and a single evening session and lasts two months. In this introductory course, participants learn about the principles of the hospice movement and find out essential information about the framework conditions for hospice work in Germany.

Advanced course

The advanced course consists of a weekend workshop, three individual evening sessions and lasts two months. In addition, all participants take part in a four-week internship at the Lazarus Hospice. Participants go into more depth on individual topics, such as biography work, the dangers of the caregiver role, basic understanding of the grieving process and accompanying people with dementia.
