About the volunteering opportunity

As a mentor, you are part of a team that looks after a house where refugees are accommodated. Once or twice a week, someone from the team visits the accommodation and maintains personal contact with a family. Location: various opportunities in the district of Ludwigsburg.

Your Tasks

The mentors are the contact persons for worries and problems, be it with the authorities, doctors or when things are missing.
They mediate between people and the right institutions.
Our experience shows that refugees are often able to organize visits to the doctor or authorities on their own. Material provision is usually not the main problem.

The mentors are invaluable because they see the refugees as individuals and take them seriously. They help with orientation and overcome everyday obstacles.
Mentorship means getting to know foreign cultures, experiencing hospitality and giving human dignity by treating them as human beings. Helping to create a home!

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.
  1. Openness to other cultures and living environments: As a mentor, it is important to be open to different backgrounds and lifestyles.
  2. Communication and cooperation skills: Mentors should be able to communicate well with other people and be willing to work as part of a team.
  3. Ability to empathize: A willingness to help is crucial, but there should be no missionary goal! Empathy enables a better understanding of the refugees' needs.
  4. Willingness to learn: Mentors should be willing to undergo further training and inform themselves about the situation of refugees.
  5. Ability to shape the mentorship relationship independently: Every mentorship is unique and it is important to respond individually to the needs of the refugees.
  6. Organizational skills: Mentors help to coordinate appointments or find the way to offices, doctors, etc. They can also help with the organization of activities (e.g. leisure activities, contacting local clubs, etc.)
  7. Reliability and perseverance: Mentorship requires continuity and commitment. This is exactly what leads to success in small steps when you accompany people over a longer period of time.
  8. Use of translation programs on the cell phone such as translate and/or multilingualism
