About the volunteering opportunity

The Kinderhaus Tom Sawyer Zehlendorf, is looking for volunteers to read to children in the daycare center.
In our bilingual German-English daycare center, there are equal numbers of children in each group who are growing up speaking German, English or two languages.
Many international children attend the daycare center, so volunteers who speak German, English, Persian, Turkish, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Polish or Hungarian as their mother tongue are very welcome.
The "Reading aloud with volunteers" program is aimed specifically at children aged 3 to 6.

Your Tasks

  • Reading aloud from a large selection of books from the nursery library (EN and DE) or from own children's books in other languages.
  • Creating a pleasant reading time for the children.
  • Encouraging the joy of reading and promoting language skills.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, basic German skills are required.
  • Enjoy working with children and be enthusiastic about reading aloud.
  • Good knowledge of one of the following languages: German, English, Persian, Turkish, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian.
  • Empathy and patience in dealing with young children.
  • Reliability and willingness to work regularly.

Time required

Regularly
Approx. 1 hour per week.
On weekdays, during the day
  • The commitment is possible between 01:00 pm and 03:00 pm.
  • One hour commitment per appointment.
  • You can decide whether you want to come at 01:00 pm or 02:00 pm.
  • The commitment can take place once a week or twice a month.

Important notice

There is a large selection of books in English and German. Volunteers can also recommend their favorite books and read from them.
