Dritte*Orte Archiv

Become an urban researcher at the Dritte*Orte Archiv.
The Dritte*Orte Archiv (Third*Places Archive) is an artistic urban research project. Since everyone can contribute as a "city researcher" and decide for themselves what exactly and how they remember, a polyphonic, new type of archive is created that is open to everyone - an archive from anyone.

Objectives

Based on the Dritte*Orte archive, it works wonderfully to activate people, bring them together and sensitize them to the diversity of people and places. It includes an interactive digital map that anyone can contribute to, an urban research backpack and a mobile archive. Anyone can visualize lost, existing or future places in Munich. Since the participating "urban researchers" can decide for themselves what exactly they want to remember and how, a new kind of archive is created that is open to everyone - an archive from anyone. A small, dedicated team is behind the project. The idea and concept come from Miriam Worek (previously ZEITKAPSEL project).

Why a Dritte*Orte archive?
Many small places are currently disappearing or being forgotten. They have grown, are not wanted and are created over time by the people you find there. They don't exist a second time. That is why it is important to raise awareness of these places - where they were, where they are and where they could be created. "Third places" are - in addition to home, work or school - the places where we like to spend our time and which are important for our social life. But other places are important for everyone! In addition to idiosyncratic or subcultural meeting places, these can also include supposedly unspectacular everyday places such as the laundrette around the corner, the second-hand bookshop with a coffee machine or the small chessboard on the Isar?

- Do you have a place that has disappeared and should not be forgotten or are you interested in City history?
- Do you know of vacant, derelict or commercial sites that could be used differently?
- Do you want to rediscover Munich and research special places, people or projects?
Then become an active urban researcher and make (your) place visible on our digital archive map!
There is an artistic-research method, the "cartography of things", which you can use as a guide or you can document the place in your own personal way. This can be done in analog form with a text or digitally with audio, video, photos or 3D scans. This is how the research could work:

- We will introduce you and, if you wish, equip you with the urban research backpack. In it you will find everything that can be useful for documenting (technology, inspiration, research diary, etc.).
- You can browse through old photo albums and archives or talk to contemporary witnesses.
- You can sit down for a few hours, collect photos and objects that tell something about this place. You can get in touch with projects or people you find interesting and interview them in real life or via Zoom or telephone.
- You can also take on a place that would not be visible without your involvement.

The short film on our website might give you a feeling for what the Dritte*Orte archive is all about. You can also find out more details on the website under "Get involved". Feel free to visit! Are you interested? Then write to us and we'll talk about everything else.
