Funding
Thanks to financial support from the Authority for Science, Research and Equality and the Authority for Education and Vocational Training, we are able to offer the workshops free of charge. Until 2012 soorum has financed itself solely through donations. Even today, most of the work is done by volunteers free of charge.
Objectives
Soorum is a queer (school) education project that was founded in Hamburg in the early 1990s. Young, qualified volunteers lead workshops with a focus on sexual and gender diversity, in which gender roles, prejudices and discrimination are also addressed. Education on these topics is not only important for queer identities. LGBT*QI hostility has a negative impact on all people, as it maintains outdated expectations about gender role behaviour and stereotypes. As one of many different forms of discrimination that exist, it also provides an opportunity to talk about tolerance and acceptance in general.
