About the volunteering opportunity
The language and neighborhood café at BENN Wartenberg is a lively meeting place where new neighbors come together every Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. to practice German, exchange ideas and have a good time together. In a relaxed atmosphere with coffee, tea and cookies, we offer a meeting place for our neighborhood.
We are looking for committed helpers to support us in running our program successfully.
Your Tasks
Your tasks
- You prepare small units for the language café (e.g. simple language games, conversation impulses or exercises related to everyday life).
- You actively support the implementation of the offer and relieve the full-time team.
- You accompany discussion groups and help participants to speak German.
- You take on an active role in the process (e.g. greeting, orientation of the group, closing).
- You contribute to an open, appreciative and structured atmosphere.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
Previous pedagogical knowledge is not a prerequisite. However, an interest in language teaching and a willingness to learn and apply methods, grammar basics and simple language games independently are desirable.

On weekdays, at night
- The language café usually takes place once a week from 3-5 pm at BENN Wartenberg. We would be happy if the volunteer would arrive a little earlier and help with smaller preparations and if the person prepares their own language exercises and games.
Important notice
It is important that you are:
- Open and patient, even when communication becomes more challenging.
- Creative and enjoy making conversations lively - sometimes gestures, laughter or playing a game together help more than many words.
- Curiosity and an interest in getting to know new cultures and perspectives.
- Reliability is key for us - the offer depends on volunteers coming regularly and prepared.

BENN - Berlin Develops New Neighbourhoods is a program of the Berlin Senate that strengthens social cohesion and integration in neighbourhoods in cooperation with the district authorities. The BENN Wartenberg site has been in operation since January 2022, connecting neighbors and initiating projects around the refugee accommodation in Neuhohenschönhausen. The aim is to bring people from different backgrounds together, develop ideas and revitalize the neighbourhood.
