About the volunteering opportunity

The Helping Hands Academy e.V. has set itself the task of professionalizing medical care in The Gambia in the long term. A central building block is our "Sanyang Safe Birth" project, in which we equip a maternity ward with modern technology to actively reduce neonatal mortality.

We are looking for a committed person with specialist knowledge to help us build a bridge between the German healthcare system and our local needs.

Your mission: Your main task is the targeted sourcing of medical technology. We strive to provide equipment at a high clinical level (e.g. ultrasound equipment, birthing beds, monitoring systems). As a non-profit organization, we want every euro to flow directly into the projects on site, so our focus and desire is clearly on the acquisition of donated equipment - for example, through clinic disposals, practice liquidations or donations in kind from manufacturers.

What we offer: You will be part of a dedicated team and directly help shape the medical future in Sanyang. As a token of our appreciation, we offer you an honorary membership. Your expertise literally saves lives here.

Your Tasks

Acquisition of donations in kind: You actively research clinics, medical practices or medical technology manufacturers who would like to take equipment out of service or donate it. Your focus is on acquiring free but high-quality donations in kind.

Technical screening: You assess the equipment on offer (e.g. ultrasound, monitoring, surgical lights) for its suitability for use in The Gambia. You pay particular attention to robustness and ease of maintenance under the local conditions (heat, dust).

Network maintenance: You act as an ambassador for the Helping Hands Academy e.V. to potential partners in the healthcare sector and build up long-term collaborations.

Documentation & logistics support: You support the preparation of inventory lists for customs and advise us on the safe packaging and shipping of sensitive technology to The Gambia.

Matching requirements: You coordinate closely with us to ensure that exactly the equipment that is currently most urgently needed for projects such as "Sanyang Safe Birth" is procured.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
Industry knowledge: You have experience in medical technology, technical purchasing or work in a clinical environment. You know what the life cycle of medical equipment in Germany looks like.

Eye for quality: You can assess whether used equipment (e.g. ultrasound, patient monitors) is still fit for use and whether it can withstand the special conditions in The Gambia (robustness against dust and power fluctuations).

Research talent: You enjoy finding sources for donations in kind and are adept at making initial contact with clinics or manufacturers.

Existing network: Ideally, you already have your own contacts with clinics, medical practices, medical technology dealers or aid organizations. We would greatly appreciate it if you are willing to activate your existing network to open doors for donations in kind and utilize synergies.

Time required

Project-based
Current status: As we are currently still in the funding phase with the Postcode Lottery, we have no acute time pressure. The project is designed for the long term.

Flexible structure: You currently have plenty of time to familiarize yourself with the needs, research potential donor sources and build a network without having to ship equipment immediately.

Duration of assignment: We are looking for someone for long-term support. The time required is very flexible and depends on your capacities (e.g. 1-2 hours per week or selectively by arrangement).

Future outlook: The intensity will only increase as soon as the funding commitments have been received and we start with the concrete logistics for equipping the maternity ward in Sanyang.

Important notice

"Gambia suitability" before high-tech: When selecting devices, less is often more. The technology must be robust, able to cope with high temperatures and dust and ideally require little maintenance. We are not looking for "disposable electronics", but durable quality.

Logistics mindset: As we ship the devices to The Gambia by container, packing size and transport safety are an issue. It helps us a lot if you already have the following in mind during the procurement process: "How do we get this safely across the ocean?"

Honorary membership: We value expertise enormously. As a token of our appreciation, we offer you an Honorary Membership in the Helping Hands Academy e.V. so that you can officially become part of our community.

Transparency & Communication: As we are a small, powerful association, we work at eye level. Michael (our treasurer/board member) and the rest of the team are directly approachable. We maintain short lines of communication and open, honest communication.

No immediate full-throttle mode: As we are waiting for the postcode lottery, this is the perfect time for someone who wants to get to grips with the topic first and build up a stable foundation of contacts without having to have a truck at the door tomorrow.

Location

This project is location independent.
