About the volunteering opportunity

Sometimes it doesn't take much to give a child security.
Sometimes all it takes is a person who listens, encourages and says: "You can do it!"

With Fit for Five, the digital mentoring project from KinderHelden, you become exactly that person. You accompany a fourth-grade primary school child on their way to fifth grade and support them during this important transition phase.

The change from elementary school to secondary school is a big step for many children. A new school, new requirements, new subjects, new classmates. Children with difficult starting conditions in particular benefit during this time from a reliable mentor who gives them security, strengthens their motivation and supports them in their learning.

As part of digital 1:1 mentoring, you accompany a child over a period of six months. You will meet online once a week for an hour and provide the child with targeted support in reading and text comprehension, strengthen their motivation to learn and help them develop more confidence for everyday school life. At the same time, you are a reliable reference person for the child who listens, encourages and provides individual support.

What's special: Your involvement is completely digital. This means you can get involved wherever you are and arrange appointments flexibly with your mentee.

You do not need any previous educational knowledge. KinderHelden prepares you well for your role with in-depth online training, provides structured materials and supports you professionally and personally throughout the entire tandem period.

Perhaps you are exactly the person who, with just one hour a week, can help a child to start fifth grade with more courage, self-confidence and joy.

Your Tasks

As a mentor at Fit for Five, you will accompany a fourth-grade primary school child in a fixed 1:1 digital tandem. You will meet once a week for one hour in our digital tandem room.

You will primarily support the child with reading and text comprehension, help build up their motivation to learn and strengthen them for the transition to secondary school. At the same time, you are a reliable caregiver who listens, encourages and shows the child: You are not alone and you can do it.

The focus is on personal, empowering support. You give time, attention and guidance in a phase that is associated with uncertainty for many children.

You can make the difference between giving up and blossoming. Join in and become a child hero.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.
You don't need to have any previous teaching experience, as you will be prepared for your new role in a preparatory workshop. We will also provide you with individually tailored learning materials and further tips for activities. Throughout the year, you will receive pedagogical support from full-time employees who will be available to you as contact persons during your involvement.

Time required

Project-based
You do not need any previous teaching experience. What is important is that you enjoy working with children, are reliable, patient and willing to accompany a child digitally on a regular basis.

To get involved, you need an intermediate level of German and the ability to meet your mentee online once a week. Before you start, you will receive in-depth online training to prepare you for your role. You will also receive structured materials to give you confidence and guidance for the meetings.

Throughout the entire tandem period, you will have a permanent pedagogical contact person from KinderHelden at your side.

Important notice

An extended police clearance certificate without entry must be presented before the first meeting with the child. This is available free of charge with our application for volunteers.

Location

This project is location independent.
