About the volunteering opportunity
Januam organizes an open language meetup for migrants who want to improve their German skills and gain more confidence in speaking. In a friendly, supportive atmosphere, participants practice everyday German, engage in conversation with one another, and thereby strengthen their linguistic and social participation.
The language meetup is designed to be accessible: The focus is on socializing, exchanging ideas, and practical language exercises that help participants in their daily lives. We are looking for dedicated volunteers, course instructors, and facilitators who enjoy supporting people as they learn German and who want to help create an open learning environment.
Your Tasks
Volunteers support or lead regular meetings at the language café. They conduct simple, interactive, and practical language exercises, encourage conversations among participants, and help them overcome their hesitation to speak.
Their responsibilities also include preparing short exercises or conversation prompts, facilitating group or partner exercises, and creating a friendly and motivating atmosphere. Teaching experience is helpful but not required. What’s important is patience, openness, a good command of German, and a passion for interacting with people from different cultures.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
Volunteers should have good to very good German language skills and enjoy engaging with people from different cultures. Openness, patience, empathy, and a respectful attitude toward the participants are important.
Experience in teaching, language instruction, or leading groups is helpful but not required. Motivated volunteers without prior teaching experience are also welcome, as long as they enjoy explaining concepts, listening, and supporting others in learning German.
Reliability, a love of communication, and a willingness to prepare simple language exercises or conversation prompts are also helpful. Volunteers should have an interest in intercultural exchange and a desire to actively help create an open, friendly learning environment.

Important notice
Volunteers do not need to be professional teachers—what matters more is openness, patience, and a love of sharing ideas. The language meetup is designed to be accessible and thrives on a friendly, respectful atmosphere.
Please keep in mind that participants have different language proficiency levels, learning histories, and personal backgrounds. Therefore, treating everyone with respect and sensitivity to issues of discrimination is particularly important to us.
The sessions are designed to be relevant to everyday life, easy to understand, and motivating. Volunteers receive support with preparation and can contact the Januam team at any time with questions.
