About the volunteering opportunity
"LU can learn" supports school dropouts or students who leave school early from Ludwigshafen am Rhein and the surrounding region as they navigate their difficult life situations and helps them achieve vocational readiness. To this end, we are looking for instructors in German, math, biology, geography, and social studies at the 9th-grade level. The program begins on September 1, 2026. It is possible to join at a later date at any time.
Your Tasks
- Preparing students for the final exam in one of the subjects listed above
- Working through the assigned exam topics
- Motivating and supporting students
- Working in small groups
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
- Basic knowledge of one of the subjects listed above, or the ability to learn the subject matter independently using textbooks
- A respectful attitude and a passion for working with young people in difficult life situations
- Experience in the educational or social services field is a plus, but not required

On weekdays, during the day
We are looking for volunteer learning mentors for the current academic year through the end of May 2027. Our project is designed for the long term. Every year, starting in September, young people have the opportunity to earn their high school diploma through our program. Accordingly, we would be delighted if learning mentors could commit to working with us on a long-term basis.
Important notice
You’ll become part of a dedicated team of volunteers who will warmly welcome you. Together with our staff, we’ll support you during your onboarding so that you’ll quickly feel confident in your role. We will, of course, provide you and the students with all the necessary learning materials.
For your commitment, you will receive an expense allowance as part of the volunteer stipend. This allowance is tax- and social security-free, does not count toward the minimum wage, and thus represents a genuine source of additional income.

With the LU can learn project, supported by the Jugend.Hafen foundation, , we help school dropouts in Ludwigshafen and the region to catch up on their secondary school leaving certificate as part of the so-called "non-pupil examination". A team of volunteer learning guides organizes lessons and supports the young people on their way.
