About the volunteering opportunity

Many people learn German in classes but still hardly ever speak it. It’s not because they lack grammar skills, but because they lack the courage and the opportunity. That’s exactly where Sprachmut comes in: a volunteer-run community in Freiburg that helps German learners—both those with and without a migration background—start speaking through fun, social activities.

We host free events every week: game nights, language cafés (in cooperation with Zusammen Leben e.V.), cooking nights, and social gatherings. The core idea: speaking happens as a side effect. When you’re immersed in a game, you forget your fear of making mistakes. For us, communication takes precedence over perfection.

To that end, we’re looking for language coaches who will join us at the events, play along, keep conversations going, and make sure everyone can participate—even those who are more reserved.

Your Tasks

As a language coach, you don’t need any formal teaching training. What matters is that you enjoy interacting with people, have empathy, and speak German well. Your responsibilities:

Play and chat with participants at one or more of our weekly events, divide groups and activities by language level, and help create an open, warm atmosphere.

Getting started is easy: Just drop by an event, get a feel for the dynamics, and then gradually take on more responsibilities—at your own pace and with the support of experienced coaches. You decide how much time to commit; even just one evening a week or every other week makes a huge difference. This opportunity is especially exciting for anyone looking to gain experience in German as a Foreign Language (DaF)/German as a Second Language (DaZ), education, or group facilitation.

Just get in touch—we look forward to meeting you!
