Backstage Heroes Wanted for Kreuzberg

The Vokalhelden is a children’s and youth choir project for children and young people ages 6 to 18. In our 17 choirs, more than 450 children sing together every week under the direction of experienced choir directors. The artistic director of the Vokalhelden is Johannes David Wolff.

Our goal is to inspire as many children and teens as possible to sing together, regardless of their background, native language, disabilities, or financial circumstances. That’s why there are no auditions for the Vokalhelden—no musical knowledge or prior experience is required. What matters to us is a curiosity about singing, the joy of making music together with others in the children’s or youth choir, and a commitment to attending rehearsals regularly. 

Participation in the Vokalhelden is free of charge. To make the choir program accessible to as many children as possible, the association relies on donations and supporting members. 

The children sing a wide variety of songs, ranging from classical to pop, and through various performances and projects—including at the Berlin Philharmonic—they have the opportunity to sing loudly and confidently together on stages both large and small.

We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to supervise children and teens during our weekly singing sessions! In addition to you, the choir director and the piano accompanist will be on site.

Your responsibilities during the weekly rehearsals

· Set up the rehearsal room and clean up after rehearsal

· Register the children using a digital tool

· Serve as the point of contact for questions from children and/or parents

· Collecting registration forms and consent forms

· Serve as the liaison to the choir office

· Support the choir directors in creating a positive rehearsal atmosphere, e.g., by taking a break or going outside with them.

In addition to regular rehearsals (every week, except during school breaks and on holidays), there are special rehearsals and performances on weekends, either in the neighborhood or at central venues such as the Philharmonie.

Participation in team days and volunteer meetings once per semester (we meet over coffee and cake to reflect and look ahead to future projects).

A passion for working with children, a willingness to listen to children’s concerns—both big and small—an interest in music and choral singing, and a willingness to work as part of a team.

Child protection is a top priority for us. Everyone working for Vokalhelden must apply for and submit an extended criminal background check. Child protection workshops are mandatory.
