About the volunteering opportunity
We want to support refugees in arriving in Germany and bring them together with locals (Nuremberg residents). With their experience and commitment, they support the refugees in their daily lives. In addition to the desire for support, the focus is on exchange. We want them to learn from each other. Ideally, a friendship will develop, but in any case connections that create networks and make it easier for refugees to start life in Germany.
Your Tasks
Start with a Friend provides exciting encounters and enriching experiences. We meet each participant personally and bring you into contact with each other according to your interests, professional background and needs. The tandem relationships are as different as the people are different. For some, it is more about the local helping the refugee with everyday issues, e.g. finding accommodation or starting a job. Others mainly want to get to know nice people in Germany. Everyone should plan around two hours a week for their tandem, but the timing is flexible. You can also become part of a colorful and active community with lots of fun events.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
It would be great if you had 2 hours a week for your activities as a tandem partner. What you actually do with your tandem partner, when and where you meet, is up to you or will be arranged in consultation with your tandem partner. Start with a Friend e.V.
Start with a Friend pairs immigrants and locals into tandems based on their interests and needs. Ideally, this leads to a friendship; in any case, it creates a social network that makes it easier for immigrants to get started in Germany. Start with a Friend supports and advises the pairs after they’ve been matched and organizes events to help the pairs connect with one another. It’s also important to us to create structures that allow people with busy professional and family lives to get involved. The schedule is therefore flexible, and training opportunities are available but optional. So far, Start with a Friend is active in 26 cities across Germany.
