About the volunteering opportunity

We are looking for legal representatives (=legal guardian according to § 1896 BGB) for disabled people in the district Mitte (Mitte, Tiergarten, Wedding), who will take care of other people's affairs on their behalf.

Your Tasks

Legal guardians have the responsible task of supporting adults in bureaucratic matters. They are authorised to represent them legally. This is because the people they look after have, for example, a mental or physical disability or a mental or physical illness and can no longer cope well on their own due to these limitations.

The voluntary legal guardians therefore provide long-term support (from 6 months to several years) in any legal matters that arise, e.g. applications to the authorities, applying for a care degree or housing matters. Depending on what the person to be cared for needs at the time.

They do NOT take over practical life assistance, like e.g. housekeeping, leisure activities, etc.. However, you are of course free to spend as much time as you like with the person you are caring for and to support him or her outside of "bureaucratic" matters.

However, the well-being and the will of the person concerned come first!

The HVD Betreuungsverein Mitte supports the volunteers with a reusable FFP2 mask. In addition, many tasks are of an administrative nature and can therefore be done from home in a corona-compliant manner.

The Betreuungsverein Mitte has also created a protection and hygiene concept.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
Apart from a number of formal requirements, you primarily need

  • Tolerance for "deviating from the norm" of a person under care and
  • Acceptance of his will and his desired way of life - even if you may not like it yourself.
In addition, you should not be afraid of contact with authorities, be organized, reliable and binding. Because you have a great responsibility for the person in your care.

Further requirements are

  • Age of majority
  • no mental or emotional handicap of your own
  • no mental illness
  • no addiction
  • orderly financial circumstances (e.g. no affidavit)
  • no ongoing criminal proceedings
  • no relevant criminal record (certificate of good conduct)
  • advanced German language skills "Behördendeutsch" + possibly another foreign language if the person in question does not speak German himself.
  • Readiness for further training
Procedure:

  1. Before you take over a support, we will of course first have a personal meeting with you to clarify whether volunteering is really what you are looking for.
  2. Then we will invite you to a training course in which we will prepare you well for your responsible voluntary work. Don't worry: There is no exam!
  3. You will then be invited to the relevant childcare authority to find out which person might suit you and your abilities.
  4. If a suitable caregiver is found for you, the court will officially appoint you as a caregiver.
  5. And then you can start!
We are at your disposal as contact persons with our collected know-how of the team during the whole process before and during the support.

And if your circumstances change at some point in your life or you no longer have time for voluntary work for other reasons, you can of course give up your voluntary work.

We offer

  • free training and further education
  • Exchange of experience with other volunteers
  • individual personal advice before and during the support
Compensation:

As a volunteer caregiver you are entitled to an annual expense allowance of 399 €.

What happens if I suffer from dementia one day? Who takes care of my partner after a serious accident? What happens when my disabled child reaches the age of majority?

For more than 25 years, the Humanistische Betreuungsverein Berlin (Humanistic Care Association Berlin) has been working for people who can no longer manage their lives on their own. In the districts of Mitte, Pankow and Reinickendorf, we therefore advise and support people asking for help on the topics of care, preventive authorisation and living wills.

  • We provide legal care ourselves
  • We provide information on preventive authorisations and care and living wills
  • We provide training and information on childcare law
  • We advise and accompany voluntary mentors and authorised representatives
Our consulting and event services are free of charge.
